Neha K um ar Minor atom AAA rep team will compete in OMHA championship this weekend While most of Oakville's triple-A rep hockey teams have ended their seasons, coach Bob Woloschuk's peaking minor atom Rangers have gamely captured their second playoff series, this time against the Burlington Eagles, and advanced to the five-team O ntario M inor Hockey Association (O M H A ) championship this week-' end in Aurora. In one of the league's two qualifying final series, requiring seven points to move on, Oakville won four, lost one and tied one to join Halton Hills as the loop representatives in the round-robin finals, beginning on Friday. Certainly, goaltending has been the key to the Rangers' two-round playoff success, as the tan dem of Ali Binnington and Stefan Chiasson are playing their best hockey of the season, posting a combined 2.50 GAA in making sure the Eagles didn't land in Aurora. After squandering a 2-0 third-period lead in Game 1, resulting in* a 2-2 tie, the Rangers showed their fighting spirit in Game 2. taking a 41 lead and hanging on for the 4-3 win, despite 26 minutes in penalties, compared to four for the Eagles. Michael Ulozas scored the final two goals to provide the margin of victory. With fire in their eyes in Game 3, the Rangers rocked the Eagles with a devastating first period barrage, capped by a highlight-package goal with one second left by defenceman Mark Luzar. Working on protecting the lead in the final two periods, the Rangers held on 5-3 to take a 5-1 points lead. Looking to take a stranglehold, the plucky Rangers showed heart and grit, once again, scor ing twice in the final 2:30 o f Game 4 to erase a 32 deficit. The winner came with 30 seconds left by Patrick Megannety on a feed from Mark Cece. After dropping Game 5 by a score of 4-1 and with another chance to clinch a coveted berth in the OMHA finals, the 1993-bom AAAs stifled the Eagles in Game 6. riding goals by Matthew Rubinoff, his third of the series, and Ulozas, his fourth, to a convincing 2-0 shutout. Other goal scorers in the six-game series were Megannety (2 ), Cece (2 ), Giovanni Siciliano (2 ), Luzar and Matthew Wood. They're off on the road to Aurora.
