Amanda Rampertab will be headed to the University of Waterloo in the fall to study mechatronics engineering, which is the design of computer-controlled electromechanical systems. Created by Canadian business leader and philanthropist Seymour Schulich three years ago, the annual Schulich Leader awards program encourages high school graduates to embrace STEM disciplines in their future careers. "We are creating the next generation of technology innovators," Schulich said in a news release. "A scholarship of this size will motivate high school students from across the country to pursue their dream and in the process help to ensure our country's economic competitiveness." This year, there were 1,147 nominees competing for financial need. Rampertab was selected for her admission average to the University of Waterloo (95.2 per cent), and her demonstrated leadership in school life and community. Her achievements include, her team becoming the first Canadian squad to win the FIRST Lego League robotics world championship in the 2010-11 season -- the robot is currently touring the U.S. in the Math Alive! exhibit for the Smithsonian Institution until 2016. In addition, Rampertab's team won the world championship in the 2012-13 VEX Robotics Competition; and last month, she participated in an academic enrichment program at Carleton University, which challenges the minds of Canadian youths with lectures, workshops and projects to improve the world, stated the release. To date, the scholarship has been awarded to 120 students from across Canadian, giving the recipients more than $7.6 million, collectively. Two scholarship recipients are selected at each of the 20 participating universities. One undergraduate scholarship, valued at $80,000, is designated for a student pursuing a degree in an engineering program. The second, $60,000 scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in a non-engineering-based science, technology or math program.
