Acts of arson prompt more patrol at Millstone Park by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, August 29, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Town of Oakville has asked Halton police to keep a closer eye on Millstone Park following two late night acts of arson that occurred there earlier this month. On Aug. 1, vandals set fire to a portable toilet within the Pine Glen Road/Millstone Drive park. Two weeks later, individuals set fire to a second portable toilet, which had recently been brought to the area to replace the first incinerated amenity. A slide on the nearby children's playground was also torched. To date, the damage estimate from these incidents stands at $1,500. This is not the first time the park has been the target of arson. During July of last year, the park's gazebo was set on fire. Area resident Richard Noronha said there has been a problem with late night partying in Millstone Park for years. "It's just getting worse," he said. "The parking lot is not lit at night and it is open, so you get people who will come in there and turn up the stereos in their cars and you will hear them partying in there...They'll get belligerent and you can hear them swearing in the middle of the night. You can hear them try- ing action to deal with the vandalism. "The police have been contacted and I have asked Halton police to do some additional patrols of the park. They do have their summerlong program where they have uniformed officers on bikes who are monitoring our parks and our trail systems," said Mark. "I have asked them to include Millstone in their rounds to see if we can either catch this person or at least make it visible that the police are out there so it doesn't happen again." Mark said he has also asked the Town's parks patrol staff to drop by Millstone on a regular basis to add an additional presence to the area. "I think the Town should light the park up, light the parking lot. That will be a deterrent. This way they can't hide. There is no cover of darkness," said Noronha. "I don't know whether the rest of the residents here will have an issue with that. Another option is to just close the park's gate at night.
