Burloak Canoe Club second at national paddling championships in Regina With all of its 48 participating paddlers winning at least one medal, Burloak Canoe Club finished a close second to Nova Scotia's Cheema Aquatic Club at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships recently in Regina. Cheema won the event's burgee title with 691 points, followed by Burloak's 668. Balmy Beach was a distant third, with 549 points. Burloak highlights at nationals included winning an 11th straight senior men's war canoe title and becoming the first non-Atlantic club to win the midget (under-17) women's war canoe gold. The club's individual medal count was led by Mark Oldershaw (six gold, one silver, and two war canoe victories as cox) and Jillian Perrone (six gold, one silver, one bronze). Perrone will represent Canada this week at the Pan American Sprint Canoe Championships in Mexico City, where she will compete in the junior women's 200-metre canoeing singles and doubles races. Sheila Mehrvar added five gold and two bronze at the Canadian championships, with Aaron Rublee and Kyra White claiming five gold and one bronze each. Other notables included Adam van Koeverden and Mark Klevinas (four gold, three silver apiece), Rob Clarke (four gold, two silver, one bronze) and Lauren Clarke and Lucy Pennyfather (four gold each).
