Canadian Club hosts crime novel author The Canadian Club of Halton Peel will host awardwinning author of the Ava Lee crime novels Thursday, Sept. 25. Ian Hamilton is a former journalist, government executive, diplomat and international businessman living in Burlington. He created the character of Ava Lee, a Toronto-based Chinese Canadian lesbian forensic accountant, while recovering from major surgery in 2009. "Ian's international experiences add a depth of reality to the many people, places and cultures that Ava encounters in her adventures," stated a press release. "The first book in the series, The Water Rat of Wanchai, won the 2012 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Crime Novel. Five more Ava Lee books have been published since then and have achieved international distribution and a movie rights deal." The dinner and speaker series runs 7-9:30 p.m. at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. -- registration and a cash bar open at 6 p.m. Hamilton's after-dinner remarks will be followed by a Q&A opportunity. The books will also be available for sale and signing. Cost to attend is $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers and $20 for students.
