Rachel Gomez earned bronze in hoops. The results for 11-year-old Rachel Gomez at the recent provincial championships sug gest she made the right decision in switching to rhythmic gymnastics from artistic. So much so, that she could very well be vying for the national team level next season. The Oakville gymnast, who will turn 12 in August, competed in provincial level 6 this past season, earning a silver in the ball event, bronze in hoop and bronze overall at the provincial championships in Ottawa in midMay. Further boding well, she had beaten the two girls ahead of her, overall, in previous meets. Next season, she could either move to provincial level 7, which means she would have to compete in three events, or move to national level in which she would have to compete in four events. Besides ball and hoop, other events include rope, clubs and ribbon. This marked the first year for Gomez at rhythmic gymnastics after switching over from artistic following an injury. Gomez is a member of Sports Seneca and she also attends school there, entering Grade 7 in September, at the Claude Watson School of the Arts. Her typical day involves training from 710 a.m., class from 10 a.m .-4 p.m. and anoth er hour of training from 4-5 p.m. Her immediate goal is to make it to the national level. Her tantalizing long term goal is to "try to make it to the Olympics in 2008." Mike Riddell, 25, from Morriston, competing in the Hustler Team Challenge at the Oakville skate park Saturday afternoon. West Oakville Oakville hosts elite meet By Lindsey Craig SPECIA L T O T H E BEAVER (905) 844-1223 The Hustler Team Challenge took place at the Oakville Skate Park over the Canada Day week end, attracting top skateboarders from throughout the GTA and beyond. Event organizer Andrew Singleton said the biggest highlight of the day was "that the sun came out", as the original date (June 15) had been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Teams consisted o f five riders, each person competing in one of the five events. A Stoney Creek-based team won the competi tion, followed by UnderWorld/BSC from Toronto and Team Rehab, comprised o f 14 and 15-yearolds, from St. Catharines. Oakville's Hustler Boardshop came in fourth, overall, with a few team members experiencing injury during competition. The average age o f Challenge participants was 17-18, with the oldest competitor at age 27, and the youngest at age 8. Due to the demand for a more youth-oriented event, plans are now underway for the Wee Man Jam, set for August 16. Age categories will be 12 and under, 13-15, and 17 and under. Since the latter category will have the best prizes, it will be open to anyone under 17 to com pete in. For each category there will also be a separate division for boys and girls, as organizers are hoping to attract fem ales into the Challenge. So far, there are 21 sponsors committed to donating prizes. "Basically, everyone will go home with a prize, w e've got so many." For those interested in registering for the Wee Man Jam, call Hustler Boardshop at 905-8441868, or log on to www.hustlerskateboards.com.
