McConnell worked in Oakville's Recreation Summer Activity Centre program from 1979 to 1981 and was regarded for outstanding leadership. He was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1982 involving an impaired driver while en route to register at Sheridan College to study architecture. McConnell's sister Catherine DeBorba, and her daughter Leah, presented Murray with the honour. "It's just incredible and humbling to see (Ray's) legacy live on and to see how much this program has grown and how many more kids are involved," she said. Murray rose through the ranks over time and this year was the west area co-ordinator overseeing the Iroquois Ridge and Glen Abbey community centres, several swim programs and a hockey camp. "The staff I got to work with for the last three years I've been a co-ordina- tor have been family, they're my best friends and I don't know where I'd be without these people," said the fifthyear Dalhousie University student. "This camp has shaped my life and, honestly, it's going to stick with me forever." The McConnell award is based on nominations from peers. Other nominees included Melissa Skippen, Michael Marchione and Lisa Robbins. "It's nice now to see some of those faces I've seen year after year suddenly get to the point of winning it and to see what it means to them is... it's indescribable, overwhelming and it's a great honour," DeBorba said. The Town also presented the Rookie of the Year award -- given to an individual exemplifying a high degree of leadership -- to Ryan Landreville. Nominated in the category were Mary Redfearn, Patrick Gamble and Nick Baldazzi. Six summer staff co-ordinators were also given the designation of High Five Champion. High Five is a quality standard for children's sports and recreation programs certified by Parks and Recreation Ontario.
