After suffering with a progressive illness, Joseph, loving husband of Eunice (Perneel), passed away peacefully on August 29, 2014 at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He was 86. Joseph was born in Saskatoon, Sask., coming to Ontario in 1951 to seek employment. He worked for a few years as a Junior Engineer at Westinghouse in Hamilton. While living there he met the first love of his life, Dorothy Tozer; they were married the following year. In 1954 they moved to Deep River, ON in order for him to work at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories for Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL). Joseph and family moved to Oakville following his job transfer in 1965 to the Sheridan Park offices of AECL, where he stayed until his retirement in 1989. Dorothy passed away in 1997. In 2001 Joseph met the second love of his life, Eunice, whom he married in 2003. Joseph will be remembered for the time he spent working as a volunteer over the years; for the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC), a community not-for-profit group that assessed and promoted clean-up projects in Hamilton Harbour and its watershed. For the past several years he received immense enjoyment in being an ESL teacher and helping out with projects at Central Baptist Church, Oakville. Joseph loved participating in stimulating conversation and was often referred to as a pleasant gentleman. He was on the executive of the Combined Probus Club of North Oakville during the first few years of its organization acting as secretary. He and Eunice have been members for several years. Joseph and Eunice did volunteer work for the CNIB and for the Cancer Society mainly for the Relay For Life. Joseph was the much loved father of the Rev. Candace (Stan) Harvey, the late Brian Alfred Stanley (Karen) Cooke, Joseph Mathew (Jill) Cooke and Richard Emerson (Lorrie) Cooke; step-father of Dale (Chris) Perneel, Judi (Robert) Russell, and JoAnne Perneel (Paul Ferneyhough). Proud and loving grandfather of Nicholas (Sandra) Harvey, Deanna (Josh) MacDougall, Evan (Melanie Campbell) Harvey. Great Grandfather of Amelia, Valerie and Ronan. Brother-inlaw to Joyce (William)Young and Edith (Wilf) Herman, uncle to many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn his passing are other members of his extended family: step-grandchildren and great grandchildren: Ryan (Kristen) Perneel - their children Ben and Eli; Jana (Henoc) Destre - their children Jorja and Nockyson; Todd (Shannon) Russell; Nathan (Amanda) Russell - their child Addison; Joshua Russell; April (Mark) Rutherford; Ashley (Joseph) Eyamie - their children Isabella, and Aspyn; Tyler (Amanda) Ferneyhough - their child Rylan; Gabriella Ferneyhough and Christopher Ferneyhough. He was also predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mary Cooke, sister Isabella (Hugh) Sutherland, and several sisters and brothers-in-law. Cremation has taken place as per Joseph's request with arrangements by Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, Oakville. Visitation is at Central Baptist Church, 340 Rebecca St, Oakville, on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 1pm, with Celebration of Life service at 2pm followed by a reception.
