B.C. company fined $325K in death of Oakville man by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Friday, September 5, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A power line company has been fined $325,000 after pleading guilty in an Alberta provincial court to a charge stemming from the workplace death of an Oakville man. Evan Horkoff, 25, was killed on Sept. 10, 2011, when a transmission pole he was climbing toppled, fatally crushing him near Blairmore, Alta., 220 kilometres south of Calgary. The Oakville man was employed by B.C.based Rokstad Power Corp., which was charged in 2013 with four offences under Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act as a result of the incident. Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety spokesperson Brookes Merritt told the Beaver three of the charges were withdrawn in exchange for Rokstad pleading guilty to one count in a Pincher Creek, Alta., court on Tuesday. The company was convicted with failing to ensure modifications to equipment that may affect its structural integrity, or stability. The charges withdrawn, include: · Failure to ensure the health and safety of a worker · Failure to ensure health and safety regulations were complied with in respect to the work site · Failure to ensure that equipment was of sufficient size, strength and design, and made of suitable materials to withstand the stresses imposed on it during its operation As part of the fine, which the company has until Oct. 7 to pay, there is also a victim surcharge fine.
