www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 11, 2014 | 18 Newcomer Maloney challenges veteran Robinson in Ward 1 by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff Political newcomer Steve Maloney is challenging veteran Ralph Robinson for the Ward 1 Town council seat in the Oct. 27 election. While there is a three-way race for incumbent Alan Johnston's regional/ town council position, Maloney, a Bronte resident of 24 years, is eyeing the Town council job. The 54-year-old, married father of two boys aged 21 and 18, said being Grand Knight on the executive board of Oakville's Knights of Columbus over the last four years and president of Oakville Columbus Association has infused public service into his blood. "I'm running on the basis it's prob- ably time for a change," he added. "Perhaps a new face, a new voice, new ideas and somebody who has shown a propensity , and ability , to work with a wide range of people." Maloney has Steve Maloney run his own company for nine years. It specializes in human resources performance and training. Before that, he ran a similar company with his brother for 14 years. The Bronte resident said he believes his professional and service club ex- perience has given him the skills he needs to represent Ward 1 residents. He also said he has a passion for working with people and leadership. "I'm a fairly good read of people. I work well with other people, I work well through other people and I'm well connected in our community," he said. "I'm very comfortable with making public speeches. I'm into training businesses, so essentially that's what you do." If elected, Maloney said some of his key priorities would be managing growth in the ward. He's hoping to engage in creative ways to make the area more business-friendly. Incumbent Ralph Robinson said there had been a "great deal of positive progress" during his terms in of- fice, but (there is) still "more work to be done." The councillor has represented Ward 1 for 32 years, and with his wife Marie has three children and 11 grandRalph Robinson children. "I remain committed to continuing to move ahead on improvements for senior recreational opportunities and harbour planning," Robinson said. "I also remain determined to acquire the Greb Lands within Bronte Harbour and to see the owners of the Bronte Village Mall property present a new plan for development." Listed among his community service, Robinson has served as the director of the Bronte BIA, coordinator of the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion and as a board member of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital as well as the Oakville Public Library. Nominations will continue to be accepted at the Town of Oakville Clerk's department, 1225 Trafalgar Road, until Friday (Sept. 12), between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The term of elected office will be from Dec. 1, 2014, to Nov. 30, 2018.
