www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 11, 2014 | 4 Terry Fox's passion to find a cure continues continued from p.1 They chose to also start participating in the Terry Fox Run because the family had been affected by it. Courage says he has lost cousins, his grandmother and friends to the disease. "My personal goal is to live long enough to see the cure. I was in Montreal when Terry Fox did his run. I remember watching him run by in Montreal," he said. "It was very inspiring to see him. The passion he had for it was something else. And what it does today is, of course, unbelievable." Courage has already raised $2,500 himself and his 19-year-old daughter, Jenna is captain of Team Courage, which will be 10-strong. Pam Damoff, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run since 2010, says she got involved in the event because of Terry Fox. "Everyone knows Terry and admires him. I truly find the Terry Fox Run is different than most events like this. It is very emotional. It's never been a race. You can walk. You can run. You can bike. People do it for very personal reasons," Damoff said. "Every year, we go down before the run at 6 a.m. to watch the sun come up at Coronation Park and we think about Terry and all of our loved ones who aren't with us." The Oakville event has grown every year for the last four years, raising a record amount last year at $115,000. My personal goal is to live long enough to see the cure. Todd has been diagnosed with cancer. | Oakville Beaver file photo "We are not allowed any sponsors, so we do not have any of those large donations. That is all friends, families or colleagues giving $20 or whatever they can. So to raise $115,000 with small donations, that makes me so impressed with the generosity of people in Oakville," Damoff said. Damoff is confident participants will reach this year's goal of $120,000. If the event raises $125,000, she has pledged to do the EdgeWalk at the CN Tower. The Oakville Terry Fox Run will take place at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd., Sunday, Sept. 14. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start time. Routes include two-kilometre, five-kilometre and 10-kilometre options and are bicycle, inline skating and wheelchair accessible. Register online at terryfox.org or at the event on race day.
