GM has wisely sculpted the sport ute to be an instantly recogniza ble part of the Hummer fam ily, right down to its squaredoff doors and flat windshield and rear liftgate. Also famil iar is the vertically slotted front grille, the subject of a minor dispute now resolved with DaimlerChrysler, which claimed the design infringed on its trademarked Jeep front end. On the inside, the H2 pro vides lots of room for up to five adventurers, plus the driver, who can comfortably join in for some cross-coun try fun. Those potential good times include the H2's ability to plow through water up to 51 cm (20-inches) deep or over obstacles up to 41 cen timetres (16 inches) tall. Power won't be a problem, as each rig is equipped with a 6.0-litre 316-horsepower OHV V8 that produces 360 lb.-ft. of torque. Also standard is a fourspeed automatic transmission connected to a Borg-Warner two-speed, full-time fourwheel-drive system that splits the power -- 40/60, front/rear --under normal driving conditions. When the going gets dicey, power can be directed to just single wheel, if that's where the traction is. As tangible proof of its off-road capabilities, all H2s feature special underbody protection, including alu minum skid plates and deflector bars for the engine, transmission and transfer case and exhaust system. The fuel tank is also guarded by a plastic shield. Finally, the H2 gets a set of gigantic 35-inch-tall BF Goodrich all-terrain tires (the largest on any GM vehicle) fitted to 17-inch alloy wheels. Despite its hefty 2,900kilogram (6,400-pound) curb weight, GM claims the H2 will reach 100 km-h from rest in around 10 seconds. For about $70,000, easily half the price of an HI, the new H2 will treat its owners to dual-zone climate control, power adjustable front seats, cruise control, remote key less entry, nine-speaker Bose audio system, the ONStar GPS-based navigation/emer gency assistance system ,and heavy-duty trailering hard ware. There are also option packages available that add such items as a leather interi or, heated front seats, chrome trim, self-leveling rear air suspension, roof rack, bush bars, taillamp covers and offroad lights. So confident is GM that the Hummer H2 will be a roaring success, that the company has built a dedicat ed factory located alongside the home of the original HI in South Bend, Indiana. Based on this new model's anvil-tough con struction, energetic power train, roomy, comfortable interior and more affordable sticker price, this plant should be, um, humming at a brisk pace. If there was ever a brand name perfectly suited for fur ther development, it's Hummer. In a few short years, it has evolved into an icon for armed-forces mus cle, much like the Willys Jeep did during, and after, the Second World War. Unlike the all-purpose, straight-forward Jeep, how ever, the original Hummer (the HI, as it is now called) was, and is, a complex piece of machinery that has not adjusted particularly well to civilian life. Not only are its King Kong exterior dimen sions an issue, but so are the limited four-place passenger accommodations, each sepa rated by a Mount Everest sized driveline hump. The equally steep six-figure pricetag for one of these boulderbounding brutes cuts plenty of otherwise well-to-do folks out of the action. To take care of these defi ciencies, GM, which acquired the rights to Hummer from AM General in 1999, will this summer launch the Hummer H2, designed to bring more buy ers into the fold with its more conventional, but still toughas-nails, appeal.
