And to that end. the Oakville Chamber of Commerce is making sure its members have every opportunity to interact with important business contacts. "The chamber provides several oppor tunities for business people to network." explains Laura Babcock, executive direc tor of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. "Business After Hours is one popular venue. Various seminars and pub lic presentations, such as the State of the Town address by Mayor Ann Mulvale. are other opportunities to share business con tacts. `To be successful, you need to work the different kinds of networking and The Chamber Plus Network (CPN) is our response to several members' needs. "CPN is not here to socialize (as are some events). It represents an aggressive, lead-driving kind of networking," said Babcock. "Members are encouraged to join because they represent a distinctive classification or type of business. The mix should help drive everyone's business and complement others at the networking ses sion. The current CPN has a lawyer, a financial planner, a chartered accountant, a business coach, an IT entrepreneur, and is actively looking at adding a few others to round out the group." There are several networking groups active in the area. Some meet in the morn ings, others at night and almost all have a membership fee. To drive business leads, some networking groups charge fines if a member doesn't bring in enough referrals for others. Some groups succeed, others go underground, while yet others fail for one reason or another. The Chamber Plus Network is open to members of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce who are allowed to visit the sessions, twice before having to decide whether or not to become a full member. Though CPN is new to the Oakville Chamber, it has worked successfully in Cambridge (with two groups) and Kitchener-Waterloo (with four groups). After studying many of the groups, a del egation from Oakville concluded that the model worked well and could easily be introduced here. Each group has about 15 members, meets on a weekly basis for lunch or at some other mutually agreeable time, and has a certain informality about it which relaxes members and encourages them to `open up' a little while still concentrating on the main objective, to give and receive referrals between members. Mike Haines, incoming president of the Oakville Chamber, is spearheading the initial CPN and has high expectations that the group will soon fill up and a second or third group will begin within a year. Owner of Quality Management Products, an IT consultancy, Haines has seen the Cambridge and K-W models work. "Some networking organizations penalize members for not bringing in enough leads. Others meet at 7:30 am to `kick off" the day. Quite frankly, I don't think most people are awake at that time to be jumping into heavy-duty business talk. Our approach has been to bring in a lunch (to the boardroom at the Oakville Chamber), everyone kicks in to cover the cost of the pizza or sandwiches, and we listen to each other talk about their busi ness and business needs." One of Haines' favourite questions to ask each member is, "What would be the prime type of lead you would be looking for?" He explains that once members under stand that, the next time they're speaking with someone and they talk about a need they have, the light bulb goes on and you tell them you know someone who can help them. Better than that, give them the CPN member's card or a contact phone number. Later, if you call the CPN mem ber and tell them about your contact, the referral system works. "No one likes to make cold calls," says Haines, "but if you have a referral, you'll have a better chance of getting business." The chamber supplies CPN members with a referral book to keep track of leads and to compare notes at subsequent meet ings so that no one feels that they are on the losing end of the exchange. Members pay an annual fee of $150 and, in some cases in Oakville, there is a waiting list for some classifications to get in. The current group has eight members and is looking for others to join. Meetings are held at lunchtime on Thursdays. For more information contact Lorraine Tonkens at the Oakville Chamber of Commerce at 905-845-6613, ext. 22.
