The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 16, 2003 - C7 Ice Bears fall in clash of Olympians By Neil Becker SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER HaltonSearch.cm I Chantal Ayotte · O a kville B e a v e r ON THE GO! S a ra B au er on the move for the Ice B ears. T h e ir season ended Sunday at Ice S p o rts O akville to the Beatrice Aeros. The Mississauga Ice Bears saw their National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) season come to an end at the hands of the defending NWHL champi on Beatrice Aeros last Sunday at Ice Sports Oakville. The Ice Bears, who again made Oakville their post season home, lost 52 to lose the best-of-three series in two straight. The Ice Bears lost the opening game 6-1. "We competed harder than the score would indicate," said Ice Bears head coach Keith Murray. "Our team is a lot better than in September." The Ice Bears couldn't overcome an early 3-0 deficit, even though they gamely came to within two goals on two occasions, at 3-1 and 4-2. Some exceptional goaltending from Tania Pinelli kept them within striking distance. "She stood on her head in making a lot of amazing saves," said rookie for ward Dina McCumber who will be playing NCAA hockey in Princeton next year. "We had about a five to seven minute lapse which ended up costing us." The Ice Bears generated some early chances but just failed to capitalize, the best one coming from Liz Marci, who took advantage of her reach and great puck strength in skating in from centre on a solo rush. Also making her presence known from the blue line was Captain Nathalie Rivard who, as usual, got a lot of shots on goal and, fittingly, scored a goal in the last game of her stellar Ice Bears career. "She was definitely a steady leader of this club and will be missed," said coach Murray. "She has dedicated 25 years to women's hockey, and was a big help to me." Facing a tough defensive squad, Mississauga was having trouble gener ating any serious offence during the first period and as a result found themselves down 3-0 after the first period. "We were pretty disappointed but we were not going to give up," said McCumber. During the second period, it was the Tania Pinelli show as this former Niagara University goalie was like a rock as she showed a quick glove hand and great lateral movement in keeping the Bears within striking distance. Feeding off the momentum of the saves, the Bears finally broke through on the scoreboard as defender Patty Austin scored on the power play to nar row the deficit at 3 -1 where it stood after two. "They (Beatrice) are such a good team and are so deep at every position," said coach Murray. "They have so many players who have been involved with the national program, and we competed very well with them tonight." Only 20 minutes away from the pos Quality I Custom sibility of being eliminated, Additions & Renovations Mississauga, who started the third shorthanded, fell behind 4-1 five minutes in. 905-332-6711 With Pinelli still standing tall in the www.dejonghomes.cofn Bears net, captain Nathalie Rivard scored on a missile shot from the point which made it 42, and for a cou ple o f minutes * sparked the notion of a comeback. · Registration for the 2003 Rugby Season With about 10 minutes left in the · Registration for the New Ultimate game, the Aeros, Frisbee League who finished first overall this past · Date: Saturday, April 26/03 season, scored · Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm again which knocked the sails · Place: Crusader Park out o f the Bears 2214 Ninth Line, Oakville attack, and made (Opposite Drive-in Theatre) . the final score 52.
