Mansbridge said he likes public speaking as it's "good to get out of downtown Toronto and see how the real world is moving" and talk to peo- ple about the issues on their mind. "I'm extremely lucky being at this for a long time. I've seen a lot of things and I talk to a lot of people. My speeches are usually a reflection of those experiences," said Mansbridge. Oakville, like many areas across the country, has been impacted by the recent recession. Asked for his thoughts, Mansbridge said there have been times of a "bounce-back" since then, but "you have to look at the job numbers" to know there are still problems across the country. He noted much of the trouble lies in the private sector. Peter Mansbridge "The concern is that businesses aren't creating enough jobs. Well, businesses often need some incentives. Are they getting the incentives they need to create more jobs?" he asked. "In terms of what we do as journalists, we have to be exploring that story all the time because our economy is based on the ability of creating a healthy atmosphere for job creation." The veteran anchor noted the Oakville Chamber "is trying to encourage the ability for all businesses to do well. That's why it's become such a powerful Chamber." With the municipal election on Oct. 27, one issue that will have an impact is voter turnout, Mansbridge said. "It's usually the municipal (level) that gets the lowest turnout rate and yet the issues that municipal governments deal with -- your town councils, school boards, you name it -- are more connected to individuals' lives than any other level of government," said Mansbridge. "Every election is a very important time. It's our basic right as individuals living in a democracy . We get to vote in and out the people that we think will do well for communities."
