But even with the m ost com pact V-6 they could find, it threw the proportions out o f whack, making the car look hideous. So they have m anaged to graft a turbo onto the 2.4 that pro duces 215 hp and 245 lb/ft o f torque. The best part is 90 per cent o f peak torque is available between 2300 and 500 rpm. To handle the power, the Turbo will use a five-speed man ual Getrag gearbox, the same m aker w ho produces five-speeds for BMW. Also available will be the four-speed AutoStick automatic as used in the Chrysler 300M that offers sequential shifting and allows the driver to shift up and down like a man ual. The car I briefly drove came in a metallic royal blue paint that really highlighted the 17-inch Blade Silver five-spoke alloy wheels. With very discreet badging, the PT Turbo has the grunt to see off many V6-powered cars I can think of. But I spent m ost o f my time with the Convertible and this is car that I think will be the next big hit. The back seat is enormous. As one o f the engineers drove while I sampled the back, I was amazed at the lack o f wind buf feting. The very large, centrally-m ounted rollover hoop must have something to do with it. The final decision on where this hoop will go is still to be made, but my advice is change noth ing. Driving in the environs o f N iagara Falls, the PT Convertible was, well, like driving a PT Cruiser. There was none o f the 'concept' car roughness you expect with one-off prototypes. Like the Turbo, this car has been thoroughly sorted out. Chrysler already makes the Sebring Convertible, which to my mind, offers gorgeous looks, seating for four big adults and a price that is reasonable. The PT Convertible takes that one step further and in a more affordable direction. I can see this car affecting sales o f the VW G olf Convertible and even the two-seater M azda Miata. The top o f the Convertible, considering the passenger area it has to cover, fits neatly into the rear and doesn't seem to take that much space away from the trunk. The tonneau covers also fit nicely indicating the care that went into creating this car and making it ready for production. I came away from my short drives with both cars feeling that there is much more the PT people at Daim lerChrysler have up their sleeves. Talking to the platform design engineers who cam e up from Detroit for the event and the D aim lerChrysler senior brand manager, Pearl Davies, they also seem to get a personal kick of making the PT Cruiser fun and keeping it fresh. There's no doubt there are many more PT versions to come cruising down the Daim lerChrysler production lines - much to the delight o f PT Cruiser fans. You could become a carrier of the week? On a given engine, the higher the compression ratio, the more densely packed the air/fuel mixture (intake charge) becomes. This means the `explosion' of the intake charge (once ignited by the spark) that moves the piston downward becomes more powerful.
