Playing up an age group is nothing new for Lang, as she w as called up earlier this year to the national w om en's team fo r a tournam ent in Portugal. To prepare for the w o rld 's, the C anadian team is in the m idst o f a nine-gam e exhibition series. The first three, against the Italian national U -19 team , have w rapped up w ith C anada cleaning up 4-0, 3-1 and 5-0, in that order. L ang opened the scoring and then added an assist in the 4-0 series o pen er, played at S herw ood F orest Park in B urlington, but played a less p rom i nent role in the subsequent tw o w ins w ith coach Ian Bridge toying w ith the line-up. W ith the cham pionships less than tw o m onths away, tw o cuts still have to be made. "I 've got a pretty good chance," said Lang. "You ju st have to w ork hard on a consistent basis." A nd it seem s she does. N ational status began fo r the teen in F ebruary o f 2001 w hen she was called up to C an ad a's U -16 girls train ing cam p fo r the eastern provinces. She w as then invited back to the next training cam p w hich pooled the east and w est divisions together. Surviving the cuts, Lang played w ith the U -16 girls national squad until June o f last sum m er. It w as then that she m ade the ju m p to the higher age division. "A t the end o f June, I w as invited to a training cam p in T oronto for the under 19 team ," she said, adding that there w as a "big difference" in size betw een the tw o levels. A nother difference for the young player w as the position she was assigned. H aving developed her gam e on the front line, suddenly the striker found h erself on defence. "It w as totally new to m e," she said, adding that coach B ridge soon put h er back up as an attacker. T he team is now training together three tim es a w eek, in addition to a physical fitness com ponent w hich the players com plete on their ow n, said Lang.
