"We're holding our Chalk it UP! event again this year to raise awareness about the importance of education and to raise funds to build schools for the rural poor in India and Africa," said 13-year-old Oakville resident Vishal Vijay, one of C.I.A.'s co-founders. "Our group believes that education has the ability to transform lives and is the most powerful way to address inequalities between children around the world." More than 70 chalk artists are expected to attend Sunday's (Sept. 21) fundraiser at 1545 Cornwall Rd. where, from 2-4 p.m., participants who donate $10 will compete in a friendly chalk art contest revolving around three themes: Education is Key, Local + Global = Glocal, and Children Making a Difference. The day will also include art lessons and a demo, live music, face painting, game stations, cotton candy and yogurt. C.I.A. was originally founded in 2012 by Vishal and his younger brother Ishan, 12 -- along with friends Claire Stewart, and Paige and Tessa Mander -- with the vision of making the world a place where every child has access to the basic necessities of clean drinking water, food and an education. "(We're) focused on three areas: community service and volunteering; raising awareness of social justice issues; and fundraising to support causes that (we're) passionate about, both locally and globally," said Vishal. Last year's chalk fundraiser collected $893 to help build a well in Sierra Leone through Free the Children's Adopt a Village Water Program. The group has also put on a skate-a-thon fundraiser and initiated letter-writing campaigns. "We're so thrilled to know that our efforts to get Oakville youth involved have begun to have an impact," said Ishan. "We have attended social justice camps and visited service projects in Canada, India, Africa and around the world. We have also held a number of events including bake sales, raffles, random acts of kindness, food drives and community events. "We have brought together youths from see C.I.A. on p.22 R0012905163
