Now, they're ready for more. Halton's new Youth for Youth Council will hold its first meeting today at 4 p.m. at Halton Regional Centre on Bronte Road. Any Halton high school student who may be interested is welcome to attend. They'll be joining half a dozen stu dents who worked on the March 21 Cultural Showcase event, along with Joanna Matthews, the Halton Multicultural Council's (HMC) new youth worker. Today's meeting will be a planning session; a chance to brainstorm about what projects the new Youth for Youth Council may tackle. Already the council has some work on its plate. According to Matthews, the youths will act as a focus group in the prepara tion of a student handbook this summer by the HMC about setting up a youth council at school. Many schools already have a youth, human rights, diversity or multi-cultural council. The handbook will enable stu dents from those schools to compile a guide to help students get similar coun cils organized at other schools. The council will also stage a regional event to recognize International Day of Human Rights on Dec. 10. It's also likely to be involved in recruiting high school students to train and present HMC anti-discrimination workshops to Grade 7 students across Halton next year. Thanks to funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the past success of the Cultural Showcase, the new Youth for Youth Council will work closely with the HMC, Halton Regional Police diver sity officer. Constable Diane Hendry, and both public and Catholic school boards, including the Halton District School Board's new diversity officer Suzanne Muir. What's key is that it will represent students on a regional, rather than a school, level. "It's aimed to help the youth spring forward with what they want to do," said Matthews, admittedly expecting no shortage of ideas from the council. The council will work to promote diversity, raise awareness on human rights issues and create anti-discrimination initiatives in the schools and com munity. If its predecessor is any indication, the council should be a success story. That group came together as a forum to link high school students and youths from across Halton. It staged the firstever Cultural Showcase at the Halton Regional Centre Auditorium last March. While that event was co-hosted by Halton Regional Police and the HMC, it was organized, with some help from Matthews, by Halton students, primarily those affiliated with public and Catholic high school multicultural councils. The Youth for Youth Council meets after school hours and focuses on issues related to the high school culture.
