Thirteen Oakville students get coveted Shad program spot Thirteen students from Oakville have beeiJ invited to the award-winning Shad Valley pro gram. Each student underwent a competitive applica tion process and was selected from a field of more than 800 applicants from across Canada to partic ipate in the four-week residential Shad Valley pro gram. Students were chosen from a number o f local high schools and private schools including Queen Elizabeth Park. White Oaks Secondary School, Oakville Trafalgar High School, Iroquois Ridge High School, St. Mildred's-Lightboum School and St. Ignatius of Loyola. Over the past 23 yeais. the award-winning Shad Valley program has proven to be a lifechanging experience for senior high school stu dents interested in pushing their creative and intel lectual capacity to the limit. This four-week residential program, hosted at 10 university campuses, encourages students to open their minds and explore new career opportu nities. Students are immersed in workshops, lec tures. projects, and recreational activities that increase self-confidence and develop such skills as problem solving, effective communication, leadership and teamwork. Students become part of a life-long network of friends and peers. A total o f 524 students will be attending Shad Valley 2003. "Shads are some of the best and brightest stu dents in C anada," said Pat St. John, Shad International president. "Students have to complete in an intense and competitive application process, so earning a place in the Shad Valley program is truly an out standing achievement." Shad International is a Canadian not-for-profit organization based in Waterloo, Ontario. The Shad Valley program was launched in 1981, and currently boasts a network of 7,500 Shad Valley alumni, over 200 benefactors, and thousands of educators at schools nation-wide. There are 13 Rhodes Scholars among the Shad Valley alumni. Preference will be given to women candidates with a profes sional designation in law, finance, social services, health or marketing and/or possess certifi cation in volunteering or fundraising. Experience on a board, volunteering or fundrais ing is an asset. The W omen's Centre o f Halton Region, located at Hopedale Mall at Rebecca Street and Third Line, is a community based, non-profit organization committed to making a positive difference in the lives of women in transition, crisis or distress. Based on the self-help model of "women helping women" the Centre offers an array of servic es to empower and meet the needs of all women regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. A nominating committee will review applications and the rec ommendations will be submitted to the board of directors and membership for approval. Board meetings are held on the second Monday evening of each month with participation at Board com mittee meetings as needed. Two-year terms commence in October.
