Rochester Midland Limited, a lead ing manufacturer o f specialty industri al chemicals and personal care prod ucts, recently celebrated 100 years of business in Canada and 14 years in Oakville. The com pany's roots date back top 1888, when Daniel N. Calkins and Clarence P. Crowell purchased the Rochester. New York Agency o f the Aromatic D isinfecting Company o f Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a compa ny that supplied equipment and disin fecting fluid for restrooms. By 1903. the thriving com pany had opened offices across the United States and moved into Canada, opening a small plant in Toronto. Then, about 30 years ago, the head office purchased Midland Laboratories in Iowa and Rochester Midland was bom. The Canadian affiliate moved from Toronto to Oakville in 1989, building a 60,000 sq. ft. plant at 851 Progress Court where about 60 per cent of all its products for the Canadian market are produced. The Canadian division employs about 75 people in everything from manufacturing to sales and serv ice. Rochester M idland's institutional division manufactures and sells a com plete range o f janitorial products including the aw ard-winning Green Housekeeping line of environmentally friendly cleaning products. These are extensively used in schools and by ecologically conscious com panies. Rochester Midland was recognized as a co-winner of the 2003 W hite House Closing the Circle (CTC) Award. Remarkably, the company is still family owned and Harlan D. Calkins, the grandson of the original founder, is chairman and CEO. His son Bradley (Executive Vice President, Marketing) and daughter K atherine (Vice Liesa Kortmann · Oakville Beaver David C unningham , G eneral M anager, and Sue Gazley, Vice President and Business M anager, of R ochester M idland Lim ited, stand behind an engraved stone at the Progress C ourt facility celebrating the com pany's 100 years of operation in C anada. President, Printex Products Division) also play active roles in the com pany's operations. Through the years, Rochester M idland has expanded its scope to include a host of products and services. The com pany's health and safety divi sion provides individual programs that focus on solving food safety issues throughout the plant environm ent. Anothef division offers water manage ment programs for boiler, cooling and wastewater systems. "Health and safety arc major con cerns these days," says David Cunningham. General M anager and COO of Rochester Midland Canada. " Keeping the work place clean so employees don't slip and fall on greasy floors; water treatment especially the treatment o f waste water; these are cru cial." The company is the largest distributor o f feminine hygiene products in North America: its line includes not only the com pany's own Naturelle brand but also Johnson & Johnson's products including diapers, disposable gloves, and first aid kits. Rochester Midland also manufactures chemicals for printing, industrial technologies such as metalworking, asphalt paving, and much more. Rochester Midland produces a full line o f chemicals for a host of indus tries and distributes them through agents in 70 countries around the world. Last month Rochester Midland celebrated its 100 years in Canada with an Open House at its Oakville offices The party included United Way fundraising, historical displays, plant tours and a commemorative unveiling. Rochester M idland will soon be fe a tured in a fu tu re O akville Beaver Vendor's Support feature. This year, he again has earned $500 and an all-expenses paid trip to Toronto for a four-day judging process and awards ceremony. This time, he's hop ing his essay will go further. "I think it's a pretty good paper," said Johnston. "I tried to make it a lot more pragmatic (this year) and less ide ologically focused. "I think it has a pretty good chance of making it, but 1 guess that's up to the judges." . Johnston's paper suggests the Canadian government must adopt an integrated approach to national security issues and focus on promoting prosper ity as a key to achieving security. Various policies, including the pro motion of intellectual property rights, tax reform and health programs, can promote prosperity, which can enhance the country's security, he argued. Last year. Johnston, who is working on a Masters degree in global finance at Carleton University, was quite frank in admitting that he entered the awards for the cash prizes. But this year, he says, it wasn't the $20,000 first-prize that drove him to write his essay. "It was just the experience I had last year," explained the Appleby College Oliver Johnston graduate. "It almost impassioned me to write again." At the awards ceremony in Toronto next week, semi-finalists from across the country will gather to share ideas, debate politics and hear inspiring speak ers. Eleven finalists will be chosen and awarded a $10,000 cash prize and a four-month internship position with M agna International Inc., Canada's largest supplier o f automotive systems and components. A national winner, chosen from the finalists and announced later this fall, will receive an additional $10,000 and the offer o f a one-year internship with Magna International.
