Inspired by a Toronto trustee candidates' pledge, three Halton District School Board hopefuls have created their own Students First Pledge. "The whole concept is people running to be trustees are not doing it for any personal gain," said Mary Dilly, a candidate for Burl- VOTE 2014 ington Wards 1/2. "It's all about the kids." She and two other candidates, Margo Shuttleworth (Burlington Ward 4) and Joanna Oliver (Oakville Ward 4) discussed their pledge during an interview Tuesday (Sept. 23). The candidates for the Oct. 27 election are pledging to ensure the Halton public board does what's best for students, their parents and their communities. "We value the importance of education in the lives of all families," said Oliver. "We want to make sure the school board puts the needs and best interests of all students first." Related promises include supporting parents' advocacy for children, as well as listening to and respecting ideas of fellow trustees. Shuttleworth said the pledge isn't about forcing anyone into a corner.
