The results are based on assessments completed in the 2013-14 school year for Grade 9 applied and academic math, as well as the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. The answers are then compared against expectations outlined in the Ontario Curriculum. The assessments indicated 89 per cent of Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) students met or exceeded the Province's standard in academic math, while 57 per cent met the mark in applied math. HCDSB's Director of Education Paula Dawson said the results are encouraging but there is always room for improvement. "The success of our students is not measured merely in terms of test scores, and EQAO results are just one indication (or measure) of student achievement that we will continue to use to identify strategies that enhance student learning across our district," she said. Halton District School Board (HDSB) had 91 per cent of students in Grade 9 academic math, and 56 per cent in applied math achieve the provincial standard. "It is important to note that 85 per cent of our Grade 9 students met the provincial standard, or a B grade or better, in their program of choice, either academic math or applied math," said David Euale, HDSB director of education. The success rate for HDSB students was 90 per cent on the literacy test that was delivered last April. The results of HCDSB students were slightly higher at 91 per cent. The OSSLT is based on the Ontario Curriculum's standards for reading and writing in core subjects and is a requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
