Khan has been the local Ward 6 councillor since 2006 and is a trial lawyer for a Bay Street law firm. The 45-year-old bested aviation pilot Rohit Dhamija by an unknown number of votes in a nomination vote Sept. 25 in Oakville. Khan is also currently seeking reelection as a Town of Oakville local councillor. He said he wants to continue representing the people in his ward. "A large portion of my ward sits in the (Oakville North-Burlington) riding, so I'm going to continue to represent the people of my ward until they decide my political fate," Khan said. In the 2011 federal election, Khan ran as the Liberal candidate in the Oakville riding, but was defeated by Conservative MP Terence Young. Khan's concerns about the housing market, increasing debt-ratio for individuals, and the struggles of aging Canadians has motivated him to run again. "I think, in terms of the economy, there have to be some significant changes made," said Khan, who has called Oakville home for 25 years and is the legal advisor for the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH). The new Oakville North-Burlington riding is one of 30 new federal electoral districts, 15 of which are in Ontario. Khan said while the Conservatives claim to be the benefactor of the additional seats in the House of Commons, he's heard differently. "They might be reading the polls, I've been going door-to-door," he said. "I ran before and I'm telling you, it's like a nightand-day difference this time." Khan has been involved in Oakville's provincial and federal Liberal associations for 14 years, and he currently serves as the director of the Oakville Federal Liberal Association. He is also a past member of Oakville Hydro's board of directors. "I love representing people," Khan said. "Clearly my opponents would love for me to disappear but I don't take my political instruction from my opponents, I take it from the people that I've been representing since 2006."
