YOUR NEIGHBOUR Oakville resident John Oliver, former president and CEO of Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), was selected last Thursday (Oct. 2) as the Liberal candidate for the Oakville riding in next year's federal election. The 19-year resident of town bested lawyer Jennifer Malabar, also of Oakville. In a blog post on the Oakville Federal Liberal Association's website Friday, an entry thanked Malabar for running a great campaign. "Our candidates and their teams are to be congratulated for bringing in new John Oliver members and invigorating the Liberal brand in Oakville," the post said. Oliver retired from HHS on April 30, concluding a career that stretched back to 1990. He announced his interest in representing the Liberals in early August. At the time, Oliver said the prospect of joining the Liberals was "very exciting, given how Justin Trudeau has energized both the party and Liberalism in this country." During his tenure as head of HHS, Oliver oversaw several major capital projects, including the conception, capitalization and construction of the $2.7 billion new Oakville hospital, set to open in late 2015. In 2013, he was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. Oliver noted several Oakville business leaders backed him in his bid for the Liberal seat.
