www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 25, 2014 | 18 Oakville firefighters bring home big wins from Firefest Oakville firefighters joined others from across the GTA and brought home some big wins in the Scott Firefighter Combat challenge today at Firefest in Chatham, Ont. on Saturday. Crews battled each other in a head-to-head race, hauling hoses, climbing ladders and aiming water nozzles -- all on a timed obstacle course. All crews try to beat their best time, as well as the world record that was set in 2001. Hamilton Fire wins top team According to the Firefighter Challenge website in the Unlimited Relay, Hamilton Fire took the team event with a 4:44 time. Ian van Reenen almost had the best time of the year (1:22), but missed the target, opening up the field for Shawn Henderson of the Oakville Fire Department to win. Top finish for Shawn Henderson Henderson finished first overall in the individual competition. And while Hamilton finished first in team competition, Oakville took second place in the team event. Darren VanZanburgen finished second in the over-40 category and sixth overall. Women lead the way Peggy Morley took second place in the female division while Andy Waldern came second in the over50 category. "Our next competition is in six weeks in Phoenix for the worlds," Phil Cartwright of the Oakville Professional Fire Fighters' Association (OPFFA) told the Oakville Beaver. Firefest was held in downtown Chatham Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. It wound down with a parade at 4 p.m. It's a community event that showcases antique fire trucks and emergency response units while promoting safety.
