Back then Nissan had too many plat forms and too many plants and people turning out cars few were buying. At Infiniti it was worse. Infmiti's lineup consisted of three sedans and the QX4 SUV. Truth was the QX4 was racking up 60 per cent of Infmiti's meagresales at the time. I remember salesnumbers of the "flag ship" Q45 sedan being described as "embarrassing". Well, things have changed. Nissan has gone from near bank ruptcy to plus (US)$3 billion sales last fiscal year. One exam ple of the change of fortunes is the a ll- c o n q u e r in g Jim Robinson Altima which has redefined the level of performance and styling that can be obtained by the mid dle class. But what is astounding is the change at Infiniti. The new Q45 is on the ground and selling well. The QX4 needs no help and the 135 entry-level luxury sedan is also being well received. I wish I could tell you about several new models com ing in very short order but there is a news embargo. Suffice it to say that by this time next year there will be six vehi cles in the Infiniti lineup. The G35 comes as a bit of a surprise, in that the 135 sedan (based on the Maxima) was already a very nice entry luxury car. But Infiniti felt there was a need for something more taut and sport ing than the 135, in short a rear-drive competitor for BMW and Audi in the hottest, and most lucrative, sales catego ry of them all -th e rear-drive sport sedan. To get yourself noticed in a segment that includes distinguished rivals like the BMW 3301 and Audi A4 V6 you have to attract attention. Infiniti does that with price. Like the Altima, the G35 also comes W ith lines showing influences from the Q45 flagship model, the Infiniti G35 sports sedan has an aggressive, yet han d some, look m ade moreso by the lack of chrom e and unnecessary c h a ra cter lines. The car also features four-wheel independent multi-link suspension and Vehicle Dynamic Control built on the all-new Advanced Front Midship rearwheel drive platform. Inside. G35 offers a myriad of amenities including a standard six-disc in-dash CD changer, leather-appointed seats with eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, a Bose premium 200-watt seven-speaker audio system and an available DVD Infiniti Navigation System with 6.5-inch retractable moni tor. The G35's performance is enhanced by a new four-wheel independent sus pension with lightweight aluminum components and highly aerodynamic styling - including a coefficient of drag of just 0.27 and zero degrees of front lift. Testing of this car was in and around San Diego, Ca. My tester was a pre-pro duction G35 with the Premium Package. I wasted no time heading out Highway 8 towards El Centro, Ca. with the inten tion of picking up old Highway 10 east of Ocotillo. Highway 10 banks and curves and flows up and down through mountains that rise from sea level up to 4,000 plus feet and back down to the California desert floor. Temperatures ranged from 58 degrees F to 92 degrees. Speeds ranged from 35 mph to 70 mph. In other words, you can encounter just about anything in the 380 kms I managed to drive. Firstly, Infiniti has got the rear drive handling of this car buttoned into place. There is a difference between this and the feel of the 135 which is front-drive. An example is plummeting down the mountain road from 3,000 ft. to the base of the mountain in less than five miles. As you lift the throttle just slightly, engine braking takes over and feeling of the slight slowing behind, like a drogue parachute, is a very reassuring sensa tion. Another example is nipping in and out of San Diego 5 p.m. rush-hour traf fic on Highway 5 North. The front wheels are in charge of getting you from here to there, while the rears are in charge of propulsion. With steering and traction at the front, the combination of weight and the need to turn combine to make that hair of a difference. But it's why BMW and Audi have evolved into what they are today and why Infiniti had to include a rear-driver sports sedan if it was to be considering in the same league by buy ers. G35 definitely is a player based on price. In terms of performance and han dling, I'm sure it is as good as the Mercedes-Benz, while the BMW 330Ci may have a slight edge, but it has been 18 months since I last drove one so my memory may be playing tricks. It's worth noting Infiniti very much wants the chance to prove it can deliver the goods. That means those in the mar ket should expect superior customer relations from the dealer and the compa ny. So no matter how you look at it, the Infiniti G35 now has the credentials to be considered among the mere handful of cars that can legitimately call them selves "sports sedans".
