Greenest and meanest fuel guzzlers The Honda Insight is the cleanest car available in Canada, causing the least environmental damage, accord ing to lists of the "greenest" and "meanest" cars and light duty trucks released by Environmental Defence Canada at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. Honda's Civic is the fourth-greenest car on the list, giving Honda two of the top four positions. Automaker Toyota's Prius (#2), Echo (#3), and Corolla (#5) rounded out the top five green cars available on the Canadian market. North American automakers placed three cars in the greenest ten: Saturn SL (#6) and SC (#7), and Ford's Focus (#9). The greenest and meanest lists were released at a news conference at the Canadian International AutoShow. The news conference launched Environmental Defence Canada's "Cleaner Cars for Better Health" cam paign, a public education effort to highlight clean car models and their environmental and health benefits. "We're encouraging Canadians to buy cleaner cars that have the least environmental impact," said Burkhard Mausberg. executive director Environmental Defence Canada. "The automobile isn't going to go away anytime soon, so we all are relying on auto-makers to make them a lot greener. Today we've released a list of the cars on the Canadian market that are best for the environment, and we hope consumers will give them a preferential look when they are buying a new car," Mausberg said. Unfortunately, things are going in the wrong direc tion. Fleet fuel efficiency an important measure of a car's environmental impact is dropping in Canada. The indus try-wide, sales-weighted fleet average for all cars and light duty trucks worsened by 3.3 per cent between 1990 and 1999. The average went from 9.1 litres to drive 100 kilometres, to 9.4 litres/100 km. (Mainly due to increased sales of light duty trucks a category that includes vans and SUVs.) Tailpipe emissions are major sources of health-damaging nitrogen oxides and climate-destabilizing carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas that is causing glob al warming. Topping the "meanest" list is the Dodge Ram Pickup 2500. The Dodge Ram Wagon (#9) was also listed. General Motors placed four vehicles on the list of the meanest 10 cars and light duty trucks available in Canada: Chevrolet Suburban K2500 (#2), GMC Yukon XL K2500 (#3), Cadillac Escalade/GMC Yukon Denali (#4). and the GMC Sierra K2500 / Chevrolet Silverado K2500 (#7). Foreign manufacturers placed three vehicles in the meanest list. Lamborghini L-147 Murcielago (#6), Mercedes-Benz G500 (#8), and Lexus LS 470 (#10). The ratings are adapted from The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's Green Book: The Environmental G uide to Cars and Trucks Model Year 2002. Vehicles are rated according to tailpipe emissions, as well as by the emissions from the plants that manu facture them, and the refineries that fuel them. Designed for the younger generation, the H onda M odel X concept was conceived around achieving ideal functionality fo r a cross-country road trip, hauling surfboards, m ountain bikes, snow boards o r ju st about anything else. T hey w anted to develop a vehicle that they could use for their activities and con ducted inform al on-site focus groups at co lle g e s, b each es, c am p site s and the m ountains. T he exterior design has a sim ple two box design with side m oldings running the length o f the vehicle for a durable look. T he side doors are designed w ithout a Bp illar and open from the center, achieving an "open architecture" style. T hese "open w ide" doors m ake M odel X the perfect base cam p or location for side gate parties. On the inside. M odel X offers a resilient and com fortable interior. The floor is flat w ith a low loading height and features an easy to clean resin surface. All seating surfaces are m ade o f m aterials that are easy to clean. Interior features include a flip-up navi g atio n screen w ith in te g ra ted w ireless Internet capability, video input and DVD playback. The stereo system includes MP3 dow n load and playback capability, along with satellite radio, cassette and CD player. Jeep Liberty named Truck of the Year The Jeep Liberty was declared the "Canadian Truck of the Year" during a press conference held in conjunction with the opening of the 2002 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto. Gerry Malloy, President of the Car of the Year Awards organiza tion, explained that, "The overall Canadian Truck of the Year, for 2002, was selected from three cat egory award winners announced in early December. Unlike some other "car and truck of the year" programs in which winners are selected solely on the basis of subjective opinion, or in which commercial interests play a role, AJAC determ ines its category winners based on a rigorous, sci entifically sophisticated process wherein all contenders are put through an exhaustive four-day, back-to-back, real world testing process. This process is unique in the world and ensures an objective outcome that is respected world wide." Before claiming the overall title, the Jeep Liberty won "Best New Compact Sport Utility" hon ours. after being pitted against oth ers in its class during AJAC's four-day Test-Fest, held late last October at Shannonville Motorsports Park near Belleville. Every member o f a test team compared every vehicle in the class, back-to-back, on the same surfaces, under the same condi tions. The test program included "real world" driving on public roads - where consumers drive as well as specific track tests. Sunday, April 21,2002. In that time, I can say that the new business generated by these ads has more than offset their cost. Accordingly, the income generated by this new business in year two and subsequent years has been free; similar to buying an annuity. However, the response I received from my quarter page ad with accompanying advertorial you ran for me in 'Money Matters' has been unbelievable. I got ten new clients as a direct result of the ad and have had innumerable clients and friends mention that they had seen the ad and how great it was. I think the concept and format of your 'Money Matters' ads; the advertorial, giving credibility to the ad and the ad being supported by the advertorial is ingenious. The results are certainly there. I don't have to tell you how happy I have been with the caliber and professionalism of The Oakville Beaver but I thought the foregoing was certainly worthy of mention. Last year you raised $ 176,000.
