A 2 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y F e b ru a ry 27, 2002 The young, and the young at heart, invited to youth centre opening By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville's first youth centre will officially open tomorrow night. Youths, and others, are invited to drop in and check it out at an open house to be held following the opening ceremonies. Its official name is the Oakville Youth Development Centre and at its helm is Tyler Young, the new program co-ordinator. "The centre is a `safe haven' for the youth within our commu nity. The vision of the centre is to provide a place in which local youths can engage in activities, from watching television, movies, and listening to music, to playing pinball, video games, or exploring the Internet," said Young. "It will also function as a resource by providing informa- ~C o th e / ^ o x v tc e s P R E -O W N E D V E H IC L E S 2 0 0 0 GRAND MARQUIS L o a d e d , le a th e r, o u to ,p o w erw in d o w s, p o w er lo ck s, a n dm o re. It's ideal for those who aren't involved in recreation or sports. Though such a venue has been talked about for years, the Town's growing youth population -- and some community and political will -- has finally made it a real ity. The centre will give young people a place to socialize, a means to learn leadership skills, and be a place to have fun. It will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 3-11 p.m. The 1,500-sq.-ft. facility is located at 177 Cross Ave. (across from the Oakville GO station). Admission is free. The centre will open its doors with tomorrow's grand opening at 7 p.m. with words from Mayor Ann Mulvale. Young said Halton Regional Police Chief Ean Algar is also expected to be on hand. Then, from 7:30-9 p.m., visi tors can see for themselves. Yet, even before it officially opens, the centre has success sto ries under its belt. Just after Christmas, Young put out a wish list looking for equipment donations that would help the centre get started. In short order that list was filled -- and it was no small order. The larger ticket items includ ed a microwave, fridge, fax machine, computer work stations, television, VCR and DVD play ers. Smaller ticket items included filing cabinets, bulletin boards, shelving and bean bag chairs. "We got a great response. We even got a pool table," said Young, 25, who hails from Brantford. He attended Kitchener's Conestoga College and has a recreation/leisure degree, and experience running a sports drop-in centre for the City of Waterloo. The wish list was, perhaps, the easier leg of a long joumey. For years, the centre was sim ply a dream for Oakville's teens. The centre was a dream of the Oakville Youth Advisory Committee (OYAC) back in 1995. Oakville has lots of activities for families, but not much for those aged 12 to 18 years -- some 10,000 youths -- until now. The centre has a $75,000, three-year Trillium Foundation grant and $130,000 in grants from local groups like United Way of Oakville, St. Jude's Anglican Church, OakvilleTrafalgar Rotary Club, St. John's United Church. Halton Regional Health Department. Community Foundation o f Oakville, and Oakville Parks and Recreation.
