The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday A ugust 13, 2003 - A 7 Landfill site has 45-year life expectancy (Continued from page A1) tractor is obligated at that point only to pick up six bags and leave the rest behind, said Miles. Patrick Murphy. Halton's commis sioner of planning and public works, said ideally a pay-per-bag system works best in a municipality that has a landfill capacity issue and some recycling prob lems. He doesn't think Halton fits that criteria. Halton's landfill has room for three million tonnes of garbage and is expect ed to last 45 years. And in 2002. the region diverted 39.6 per cent of the 168,000 tonnes of the waste it collected. It's the highest diversion rate in the GTA. The report. Murphy .said, will include looking at other municipalities with a comparable landfill life expectancy and recycling record and whether a pay-per-bag system is sensi ble. Regional councillors were open to the idea. "I'm waiting to see what they (regional staff) come back with," said Milton Regional Councillor Barry Lee. "It's worked in some municipalities and it hasn't worked in other municipali ties." Milton M ayor Gord Krantz wel comes the investigation o f a pay-perbag system, but said. "I think in Halton we're doing a reasonably good job" at recycling and efficiently utilizing land fill capacity. At least one resident was skeptical. John MacArthur, from Burlington, said a pay-per-bag system risks being abused by some who will do what they can to avoid putting too many bags out for collection. "People will just fill a bag and pack it so full and defeat the purpose." he said. 9 OAKVI LLE N O TIC E OF P U B LIC M EE T IN G Z O N IN G A M E N D M E N T A PP LIC A T IO N APPLICANT: TOWN OF OAKVILLE File: 42.03.71 A m e e tin g w ill be he ld re g ard ing a p ro p o s e d te c h n ic a l Z o n in g A m e n d m e n t in itia te d b y th e Town o f O a kville to p e rm it 4.5 m w id e d rive w a ys, c u rb c u ts and d o u b le c a r g a rag es fo r lo ts h a vin g fro n ta g e o f 12m o r g re a te r w ith in th e R 1 1 zone. "You need to look at parts of the community that may not see this as their key business," said Martin. "My experi ence with these sorts o f things is that everybody learns, and that's a very good outcome." But Wendy Burton, president of Clear the Air Coaliton. told councillors that the task force should be made up of committed environmentalists, who can provide enthusiasm , leadership and vision to the project. "I hope we are looking to develop an ambitious plan," she said. "I hope we develop a plan that will set the bar and that everyone will look to." Burton recently established a Citizens, Environm ental Advisory Committee (CEAC) that will offer its own advice to council on environmental issues. Mayor Ann Mulvale suggested the task force may be able to attract people with a passion for the environment, as well as previously untapped networks of friends and colleagues. Once established, the task force is expected to hold monthly meetings that will be open to the public. The process for creating the Environmental Strategic Plan will also offer other opportunities for public con sultation, including opeif houses and workshops. The official goal of the plan is to "outline targets, measurable goals and the means to achieve environmental protection and improvement through the geographical area o f the town of Oakville."
