The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 15, 2003 - G Dunehawk is family SUV of the future `04 Impreza Nissan claims the Dunehawk concept shown at the Frankfurt Motor show is the family SUV of the future. The Dunehawk is Nissan's solution to matching full MPV versatility with the dynam ic attributes o f a genuine SUV. Combining eye catching lines with thoughtful features and gen uine practicality, Dunehawk paves the way for Nissan's 4x4 future. A tough, modem and innovative sevenseater SUV, it's large enough for the entire fam ily and more than capable off-road, yet remains a strong and nimble performer on-road. Dunehawk has genuine off-road ability thanks to its rugged chassis, ground clearance and advanced, electronically controlled ALLMode 4x4 system. It also has an exceptionally roomy interior full of useful features, making it perfect for active families who need a versatile car to fit in with their hobbies. Whether it's a family trip away sailing, mountain biking, horse riding or simply exploring, Dunehawk would make the ideal companion: the perfect sports utility vehi cle (SUV). The rugged ladder frame chassis, short front and rear overhangs and dramatic 20-inch wheels allow Dunehawk to cross difficult ter rain with ease. The ladder frame also provides the additional strength. Dunehawk's bold and imposing design fea tures smooth surfaces with iconic, angled accents. The body adopts a cylindrical design theme, with gently curving body sides that are narrower at roof and chassis level and wider at exterior goes back to basics (Continued from page C1) N issan's D unehaw k concept com bines SUV utility with seating fo r seven and the interior versatility of a MPV. the body belt-line. This design solution helps create a feeling of strength while giving greater interior width where it's needed most - at elbow level. The cylindrical theme is repeated at the tail gate. on the extended wheel arch blisters and on interior fittings. There are neither door handles nor door mir rors to disrupt the Dunehawk's surfaces. The doors are opened electrically by brush ing a pad on the flanks of the Dunehawk, while rear facing cameras with pop up screens at either end o f the dashboard take care of what's happening behind. Practical elements include ample storage space with deep bins on the doors and side pan els as well as an aircraft-style overhead console which runs centrally for the full length of the roof and incorporates luggage lockers. For added convenience and versatility, Dunehawk has a fully flexible seating arrange ment. All seven seats can be folded electrically by remote control using a push button pad, to lower, fold flat or raise the seats individually or collectively. All the seats have full three point harnesses for maximum family safety. Honda Civic gets new look for 2004 A more sporty, aggressive and distinctive appearancefor all Civic models The Honda Civic, one of the best-selling passenger cars in Canada for the last five con secutive years, has a new look for the 2004 model year. All Civic models (sedan, coupe, hybrid and SiR) have received new front- and rear-end treatments to the headlights, taillights and bumpers. The result is a more sporty, aggressive and distinctive appearance. The most significant of the changes for thee 2004 Civic Sedan include th availability of Honda's race-bred VTEC system previously unavailable. The new Si Sedan trim includes the more powerful four-cylinder engine, adds larger 15-inch tires and includes amenities such as a power moonroof and carbon-fibre-look trim on the instrument panel and front console. Both the Civic Coupe and Sedan have been upgraded with new front and rear fascia. With revised headlights, bumpers, grille and hood, the Civic now exudes a more sporty design. Additionally, Honda's designers further differ entiated the look of the Coupe from the Sedan and created a more aggressive front-end for the 2-door. The sporty three-door SiR is now equipped with new 16-inch wheels and P205/55 R16 tires. The new wheels and tires add consider ably to the vehicle's four-wheel independent suspension, while available 17-inch accessory wheels push the performance and aggressive appearance even further. The SiR also receives new projector-style headlights and new taillights for a m ore' European look. Honda's Civic model is available to Canadians in a wide range of styles, trims and colours, appealing to a wide range of drivers. The fun-to-drive Coupe and Sedan are Honda's volume sellers. Available with a VTECequipped engine and either five-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions, the both models offer tremendous value to the con sumer and include a long list of standard fea tures. The Civic Sedan Hybrid features Honda's second-generation gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Achieving a substantial 35-percent fuel economy improvement over a comparable Civic Sedan, the Civic Hybrid is Honda's latest mass-produced solution to preserving the envi ronment. Finally, the sporty SiR is built specifically for the driving enthusiast and packs a 160horsepower i-VTEC engine with a five-speed manual transmission mounted rally-style onto the dashboard. Equipped with well-bolstered bucket seats and European-style tuning to the four-wheel independent suspension the SiR is Honda's sportiest Civic, all in a functional three-door body style. The Impreza WRX STi comes with Subaru's most per formance-oriented Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with DCCD (Driver Control Centre Differential). In automatic mode, a computer varies the front/rear torque split automati cally according to driving conditions and driver input. In manual mode, the DCCD system allows the driver to vary the firont-to-rear torque distribution for different driving condi tions. Using a small control wheel on the centre console, the driver can transfer as much as 65 per cent of available torque to the rear wheels to increase handling agility. These racing and technical innovations are matched by performance styling inside and out. Subaru has saved as much weight as possible by using lightweight components, an alu minum hood and reduced insulation. Even the rear window is thinner to save weight. But they have given in somewhat to North American expectations of comforts and amenities with standard air conditioning, power group and 6-speaker AM/FM/6CD/Cassette audio system. Other sporty interior touches include the 3-dialed alu minum-ringed instrument cluster, sport seats - butt grabbers, my daughter calls them - with bolstering to hold you firm through the hairiest comers, and a sexy 3-spoke, leatherwrapped steering wheel. Outside, the Impreza WRX STi reflects the redesigned styling that has gone back to basics and away from the goofy goby-eyed style of last year. STi engineers also restyled the car to improve aerodynamics, optimize lift force balance, maximize engine cooling. The enlarged scoop in the aluminum hood feeds outside air to an intercooler that is larger than that found on the Impreza WRX. The dual element rear spoiler reduces lift and improves stability at high speed. It also intersects the horizon line in the rear view mirror and blocks out those annoying flashing lights from police cars chasing you. Airflow is also managed via comer spoilers on the front bumper and STi side ground effects. The front fascia features four halogen headlamps and distinctive STi fog light insert covers with the cute pink logos. Large diameter Brembo brakes are clearly visible between the spokes of the 17-inch lightweight forged aluminum-alloy BBS wheels. Safety features include 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with EBD, front seat head/chest side impact air bags, dual front airbags and 3-point seatbelts with load-limiters and pre-tensioners. It's a pretty complete package. Sure, it has a few rough edges, a stiff racing suspension, grabby tires and the mercuri al temperament of any performance machine that can actual ly race on Sunday and commute on Monday. And, while not exactly what I would consider cheap, at a one-trim level, one-price MSRP of $46,995. with perform ance comparable to Porsche, AMG and BMW's M cars, the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi offers considerable bang for the buck. As Subaru would say, "It's the rally car you always want ed but thought you'd never be allowed to own." 0 STRIKING DESIGN Q PROVEN QUALITY Q FUN TO DRIVE Q AWARD-WINNERS 0 0 SUPERIOR SAFETY Q LEADING TECHNOLOGY 0 POWER 0 GREAT SELECTION C L E A R O U T EVENT, THRILLING PERFORMANCE October 25TH 2004 N IS S A N A LTIM A FREE BBQ.
