Check us out on oakvilleice.net Italian cyclists stayed in Oakville Oakville had its own `Little Italy' on Wyeeroft Road last week. Nearly 60 members of the Italian Cycling Team, including 18 racers, stayed at the Holiday Inn Select during last w eek's Road World C ycling Championships in Hamilton. The entourage even included a cook, former champion cyclist Piero Falomi, who prepared pasta for the entire team during its stay. Luciana Rota, the team 's director of m edia relations, said the Italians enjoyed their stay in Oakville. "We had a good feeling with the people and it was good for motivation. There are a lot of Italians in Oakville -- not with a lot of cycling knowledge but they know Italians," she said. ( The group was led by Franco Ballerini, who had the team follow the exact same schedule as it did at last year's world championships. "H e's a very professional teacher, a perfectionist," Rota said. The blend of Falom i's cooking and the hotel's beds apparently agreed with the Italians, who had three finishers in the Top 20 at Sunday's elite men's road race. Paolo Bettini finished fourth. Luca Paolini placed eighth and Giovanni Lombardi came in 20th. Holiday Inn Select managing direc tor Frank Vismeg said the Italian team was very respectful o f the facility. "They were very well-disciplined, professional and organized. Some teams can cause trouble," Vismeg said. "It was nice to have them in Oakville." The Italian cycling team , which com peted in last w eek's Road W orld Cycling cham pionships in Ham ilton, stayed in Oakville at the Holiday Inn Select on W yeeroft Road. The game, won 2-1 by the Blades, ended with a spirited bout between Burlington's Andrew Thachuk and Oakville's Paul Dawson. The Oakville coaching staff, feeling Thachuk was sent out to fight by Wiseman following a timeout with two seconds left, shouted at the Cougars bench. Wiseman responded by climbing from the bench into the grandstands and moving towards Crisculo, who also hopped into the stands. Fans intervened between the two men and no punches were thrown.
