Kennedy offers grassroots voice by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff Mayoral candidate Mary Kennedy has had a few brushes with fate and escaped unscathed, vowing now, as part of her campaign, to improve Oakville residents' personal safety. "It's a big issue because I've had my safety compromised in Oakville, which seems really strange," she said, mentioning a few incidents while waiting for public transit. Kennedy, who is retired and in her 50s, said as mayor, she'd look to improve Oakville Transit service, which she uses regularly. "There are a lot of complaints from passengers that it doesn't really work that well for them," she said. "Sometimes, we wait for a bus for over an hour when it's supposed to be every half hour." Raised in Oakville, Kennedy said her decision to enter the election was to set an example for her grandchildren. "I've always been interested in politics," she said. "I want them to run for elections themselves so I thought, you know what, I'm going to do it myself." Both musical and passionate about the arts, she's penned two books that are awaiting publication. Kennedy can play the guitar and harmonica, and is looking to buy a keyboard and drums in the future. Fostering a sense of community and giving back are also important to her. n a C u o Y g n i Everyth Imagine for Halloween 9 | Friday, October 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Mary Kennedy Kennedy volunteers for the Salvation Army, and in the past, canvassed for the Canadian Diabetes Association. "Besides my time, I donate to the food bank all the time," Kennedy said. Baby food and diapers are her favourite donations. "I don't think any child or baby should do without while I have my cup of coffee," she said. Kennedy said the electorate should consider casting a vote for her because she is a people person who is always willing to listen. "I value everybody's opinion," she said. Hate your kitchen?
