"There are many communities that no longer fluoridate and I believe there is not only no need for it, but it is causing harm to people's health," he said. The 50-year-old said some councillors on Regional council "changed their vote when push came to shove" on the fluoride issue in 2012. "I will vote to stop water fluoridation," he said. "I will not change my mind at the last minute. Of that you can be sure." His interest in the issue has involved attending the World Fluoride Conference in Toronto. Also contesting the mayor's race in Oakville is Gord Brennan, Rob Burton, Mary Kennedy and John McLaughlin. Warchol and his wife Valerie have lived in Oakville's River Oaks community for 11 years. He is a certified tool-and-die maker with more than 25 years of experience, and also works as a part-time school bus driver. Warchol said he's interesting in studying if synchronizing traffic lights in town could ease congestion. He'd also consider parks and schoolyards as possible sites for community food gardens. "This is a popular use of extra nonutilized areas in Oakville," he said, adding he'd promote energy-efficient buildings and Pre-K to Grade 12 Grammar Greg Warchol rooftop gardens as mayor. "Oakville should attract responsible, green, and solid businesses to help our city grow intelligently, and create more employment opportunities for the people here," he said. Warchol volunteers as an instructor with the U.S.-based National Cave Rescue Commission and at Oakville Friends of the Library book sales. He said he's generally pleased with the state of the Town's affairs and is interested in "maintaining the status-quo." "I recognize local government can only do so much," he said. "I simply care about people and want everyone to be as healthy as possible."
