www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 17, 2014 | 4 Brennan advocates balanced approach in mayor's role by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff A self-proclaimed people person and political history buff, Gordon Brennan decided to enter the election race last February because he knew Oakville needed a multi-issue mayor. "I decided to run in this election because I felt the timing was right for change," he said. "As cliché as that may sound, I feel in my gut a balanced change is needed and I can actually provide that change in a controlled, manageable method." Brennan and his wife Sandra have been Gordon Brennan married 21 years and lived nearly all that time in Oakville. They have two teenage sons. Brennan, 51, studied Early Childhood Education at Sheridan College, and earned his real estate licence through Seneca College. "I am proud to say that I sold hundreds of new homes here in Oakville and am proud to see how well the subdivisions have become a stable part of the whole of Oakville," he said. Brennan lists climate change, high taxes and transit as the big campaign issues he's been discussing with voters. He said change to Oakville Transit could Open House October 25th and November 15th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm 2241 Mississauga Rd. Mississauga, Ont. "It needs to be changed so it runs like the buses in London, England -- separate individual companies competing for our $8 million in revenues." The current policy for allocating green space also needs to be amended, Brennan said, to be "80 per cent save not pave and 20 per cent growth." On climate change, Oakville should be "proactive and get our beautiful town ready for Mother Nature's fury that we have seen all over the world," he said. "Our infrastructure needs updating and some retro-fitting to withstand the severe weather we have been having. Just look at the example in neighbouring Burlington." A community volunteer, Brennan has been on four school councils in a variety of roles, from facilities director to vice-president. He is currently active on W.H. Morden Public School's council. Brennan also served as a Big Brother in Oakville for eight years. If elected on Oct. 27, he promises better efficiency at Town Hall and to respond directly to residents' concerns. Brennan said he'd never be a true politician, but rather a "leader, delegator and people person." "You will see me all over Oakville every week without fail in the fields, getting my hands dirty, along with seeing me representing you in a suit and tie with all the high profile people, who will help us reach all our Oakville goals," he said.
