www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 23, 2014 | 14 The race for public school trustee positions in Oakville by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver Editor's Note: eligibility requirements to run for the Halton District School Board ask that all candidates standing for election live in Halton. For candidate profiles as submitted to the Oakville Beaver, visit our election coverage at www.oakvillebeaver. com. Election Day is Monday (Oct. 27) and the race is on for seats at the Halton District School Board (HDSB). Wards 1/2 Public school incumbent for Wards 1/2 Don Vrooman faces challenges from Tracy Ehl Harrison and Martin Gegus. Vrooman, who has been the Wards 1/2 trustee since 2006, said funding is the public school system's "most significant challenge" across Halton. "Halton is underfunded for special education and underfunded for education infrastructure, particularly for the renewal of older schools," said Vrooman. "I will continue work with the HDSB, the Ontario Public School Boards Association, the municipalities in Halton and the Ontario government to change legislation so that development pays for new schools, reducing the municipal tax burden and Ontario's narrow reliance there upon." Ehl Harrison said she is seeking public office for two reasons -- to change the tone and effectiveness of public education dialogue in Halton through collaboration and proactive and inclusive communication; and because she has energy, passion and new ideas to explore with the community. "I am a collaborative, creative, energetic, analytical and action-oriented person who cares very much about healthy and happy students and families, community building and creating positive and peaceful spaces for people to come together, have fun, learn and thrive," said Ehl Harrison. Ward 3 Incumbent Ann Harvey Hope is up against Brandon Jones in Ward 3. Hope, the sitting trustee since 2010, said the biggest challenge from her point-of-view is maintaining and creating good schools -- and also surrounding communities -- for students within the realities of "our fiscal constraints imposed by the provincial government." "Parts of Oakville are growing and others are mature or shrinking. Balancing the needs of all see Public on p.15 CosmetiC & Family Dentistry · orthoDontiCs · implants invisalign · Dentures...
