"Halton has the best job creation record in all of Canada and we need to continue job creation with a chair that has a proven track record of attracting jobs to the area," Carr, 59, said. "I will continue to ensure that we have economic prosperity and keep Halton the safest region in Canada." In choosing their next chair, the Milton resident said experience and leadership are qualities that he has demonstrated throughout his 24-year political career as an MP , MPP , legislature speaker and regional chair. "I have a proven track record of helping residents," said Carr, who before entering politics played professional hockey in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League and was also the goalie for the 1975 Memorial Cup-winning Toronto Marlies. "I have attracted thousands of jobs to Halton like the new Target warehouse with 800 jobs in Milton, and the Lowes warehouse with 600 jobs. I want to keep Halton's economic prosperity the best in Canada and we need strong experienced leadership with a proven track record at attracting jobs to Halton region." As Halton chair, Carr started the Region's citizens priority panel, which helps guide the Region's strategic plan. "By consulting with Halton residents in this way, we ensure that we do not make promises that are impossible," Carr said. "We are one of the first municipalities in Canada to use this panel." Carr lists freezing taxes and investing $3 billion in the Region's infrastructure for roads and water as some of his top accomplishments during his first two terms. He said the use of green carts has also saved taxpayers $1 billion by extending the life of the landfill site by 44 years. "Halton also has the lowest unemployment rate in Canada and I'm proud that Halton has been named the safest region in Canada for seven straight years." Also running for Regional chair are Syed A.
