Oakville family donates $1M to surgical robotics program by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, October 24, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A surgical robotics program that will serve Peel and Halton regions is a little closer to reality following a $1-million donation by the Pierre L. Morrissette Family Foundation. Surgical robotics allow surgeons to perform open and laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally-invasive, through a few small incisions that wouldn't be possible through traditional surgical techniques. The program will be established at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Oakville resident Pierre Morrissette said he first heard about the program from the chief of surgery at Trillium Health Partners Foundation. "I was very impressed by the innovative aspect of the application of new technologies to complex surgeries," said the founder of Pelmorex Media Inc., which operates The Weather Network, which also makes its home in Oakville. Surgical robotics also allow for smaller incisions resulting in fewer post-operative complications, less blood loss, less pain for patients and faster recovery times. The donation matches a $1-million fundraising effort by the Trillium Health Partners Foundation that began in the summer of 2013. "Our community has a long tradition of stepping up and responding to the needs played in inspiring hundreds more to come forward to help our hospital is tremendous and deeply appreciated." "I've been very involved in the Oakville campaign and whether it's Oakville or the surrounding area, I've been very impressed by the communities' commitment to very important local causes," Morrissette said. The surgical robotics technology will further enhance Credit Valley's cancer treatment program. Dr. Tom Short, chief and medical director of surgery at Trillium Health Partners, said 80 per cent of cancer patients require surgery as part of their treatment. "At this hospital, we have a critical mass of gynecologic and prostate cancer cases, which are two significant areas in which there is a proven clinical advantage to using robotics," Short said in the release. The surgical robotics unit will be housed in a customized operating suite that is part of the redevelopment and expansion of Credit Valley Hospital. The purchase of the equipment will be made at the time of the opening of the new operating suites, which is expected to be completed in approximately three years. "It's pretty rare in Canada, overall, to have robotics capabilities and to have innovative technology like this at work," Morrissette said. "Often people have to go south of the border for this, so, it will be a benefit for our region to be able to provide this in our own backyard."
