The tournament attracts some of the best peewee and ban tam teams from both the U.S. and Canada, and the Oakville R anger peewee AAA rep team were one of those participants. First up for the Rangers were the powerful Vaughan Kings who skaled away with an 8-1 win. the Rangers lone goal com ing off the stick o f Anthony Scalia from Max Mihaichuk and Cam Watts. The Rangers let game two slip away from them with missed opportunities while opponent Team Illinois made the best of their chances in a 5-2 decision. Finding the scoresheet were Jeff Peel (1 g, 1a). Steven Guzzo ( lg), Mark Borcsok (2a) and Glen MacDonald (la). team from Anchorage must have been suffering from their journey as they were humbled 9-0. Kevin Campbell earn ing the shutout. Ten players counted points with four to Scalia ( lg, 3a) and Patrick Readshaw (4a), and three for Watts (2g, la) and Grant Kozlik (2g, la). Oilier point getters were Borcsok (2g), Patrick Marsh (1 g, 1a) Tyler Stothers (1 g. 1a). Guzzo (2a), Peel (2a) and Andrew Neuwald (la). Last up were the St Louis Blues who put the game away in the second period en route to a 7-2 victory. Ranger bright spots were goals by Marsh and Stothers with assists to Stothers. Neuwald and Adam DiMarco. It was an excellent learning environment in a well run, organized tournament. The unfortunate outcome was lessened somewhat by the pleasant reception given to the team during borders crossings by both American and Canadian officials. With only three gam es played under new coach Frank Carnevale. the O akville Blades are proving to be fast learners on the ice. Carnevale, who at one time coached in the OHL and in Europe, is preaching a new playing system, that resulted in a pair o f recent wins -- 6-3 in Buffalo on Monday night against the Lightning and 4-1 at home on Friday night against the Streetsville Derbys. "I like a lot o f puck movem ent, with the kids handling the puck," C arnevale said after Friday night's 4-1 win. "M ovem ent and not giving up the puck is the key, and talent won us this game tonight." Even though he took over recent ly from the departed Jay Anderson, C arnevale, who has coached NHLers such as Jam ie Storr, and form er professionals such as Gary Leem an, and Bob Manno in Europe, was not shy in voicing his goals for the rem ainder o f the season. "We are shooting for fourth place," he said. The first period show ed a hungry O akville team as they were pepper ing the opposition's goalie who was stellar in the early going. A fter denying the Blades from scoring on tw o power play opportu nities, Streetsville goalie Zak Brown showed that he is indeed hum an, as forw ard Mike Ruberto tucked home a rebound to give O akville the all im portant 1-0 lead. "We knew that we were playing well, and we just had to keep it up." said Ruberto. "All four lines played well, and we have to listen and do what the coach says." During the second period, the D erbys, who are a young team full o f potential, got the break they needed when seventeen year old Steve D onnelly pounced on a juicy rebound and tied things up 1-1 head ing into the final 20 minutes. "D iscipline was good tonight," said Ruberto. "The coach is preach ing discipline, and we only took about three penalties tonight which is a big im provem ent." It was the same pattern in the third period with the Streetsville goalie show ing no fatigue as he still displayed cat like reflexes until newly acquired Ryan E llis deflected a shot to put O akville ahead 2-1. With the m inutes ticking down, the Blades went for the ju g u lar as sniper Rob Tarantino fired in the third goal to stretch their lead to 3- 1 . Not giving up and pulling all the stops, Streetsville pulled their goalie but it backfired as Dan Powers rounded out the scoring with an em pty netter to m ake the final 4-1. "It's been quite the challenge and we have some good talent here, and we are all focused on w inning a cham pionship." said Ruberto. A ssists went to Ryan Ellis (2), Rob Tarantino. Paul D awson, Mike Ruberto and Charlie Giffin. Rec|dick ousted in provincial semis Julie Reddick's Oakville Curling Club rink were unsuccessful in their attempt at winning a fourth provincial wom en's curling title. In fact, for the first time in half a decade, the Reddick rink did not make it to the provincial final as they were ousted in the semifinal, 6-4 by Lee Merklinger. It was their second successive loss to the Merklinger rink as they also lost their final preliminary round game to Merklinger, 5-2. But Reddick's 4-3 preliminary round record was still good enough for third place and a berth in the semifinals against Merklinger with a 5-2 record. Merklinger went on to the Sunday morning final where they lost 8-6 to Stephanie G ray's Palmerston Rink. G ray's rink, who were undefeated throughout the seven preliminary round games and in the championship game, will now go on to represent Ontario in the national junior women's championship. Julie Reddick and her team o f Karen Vachon. Leigh Armstrong and Stephanie Leachman had won three o f the previous four provincial junior championships (and were finalists the other year).
