The Oakville Beaver, W ed n e sd a y February 6, 2002 - D 3 Marika rink settles for third, still has shot at Canada Games The Oakville Curling Club hosted the bantam boys and girls provincial curling championships over the weekend. Marika Bakewell had a shot at forcing a tiebreaker for the championship in her last game, but she lost and had to settle for third place with a 5-2 record. The good news, however, is that her third place finish kept her in the hunt for the Canada Games. That's because the top four teams from southern Ontario will compete against their four counterparts from Northern Ontario to see who will represent Ontario at the Canada Winter Games which will be played in New Brunswick in March. Also on the Oakville team are Stephanie Corrado, Lisa Weagle and Kristy Wallace. Helen Nicol's rink from the Unionville Curling Club won the championship with a 6-1 record. Second place, also with a 5-2 record, went to a team skipped by Erin Morrissey from the Rideau Curling Club. Wrapping up the fourth and final berth was Laura Payne from the Prescott club (who did it by beating the Marika rink from Oakville in that final match). The guys title was won by the Andrew Nixon foursome from Highland Country Club in London with a round robin record of 6-1. The next three teams were all 5-2. However, only the top three teams advance to the boys' curl-off against Northern Ontario. So the tie breaking shakedown resulted in Mike Anderson's team from the Bayview Curling Club earning second place. To secure the third spot, Chris Gardner's rink from Carleton Heights Curling Club had to win a tiebreaker against Troy Winch's team from the Sutton Curling Club. NOKIA CUP Oakville's John Base in his ninth trip to the Nokia Cup provincial men's championship didn't have one of his better results, finishing 4-5. OTHER NEWS In other curling news, the Oakville Curling Club will be hosting a Business Women's Invitational Bonspiel on Saturday. February 23rd . There is still room for a few more entries. AT RIVER OAKS ARI NA Oakville schools make finals In the Mentor College Invitational Grade 7/8 basketball tournament over the Jan. 26/27 weekend, Oakville schools made their share of finals. The most successful team was the boys squad from Oakville Christian. After downing Sommerville Manor of Mississauga in the opening round, the Jaguars fought off a tough Glenbumie team 38-33 to advance to the championship round. In the semifinals. Oakville Christian came back from a 47-41 deficit with two minutes remaining to tie the game with Allan A. Martin of Mississauga and send it into over time. In the first overtime, the Jaguars fell behind six points again, but fought back to tie. A second overtime also did not produce a winner. But in the third overtime. Oakville Christian took a sixpoint lead of their own and hung on for a 61-57 win. The boys were obviously tired in losing the finals 50-20 to a strong Queensway Christian team from Etobicoke. Jrcon Lim led Oakville with seven points in the finals. After their close loss to Oakville Christian, Glenbum ie downed the hosts from Mentor and then dumped TEAM School of Mississauga 51-24 to win the consolation championship. Oakville Christian girls defeated TEAM School before losing 35-20 to Mentor College in the consolation championship. The Glenbum ie girls lost their con solation semifinal to host Mentor. In their last 18 games, they've lost just one game in regulation time, while posting 14 wins, two ties and Friday's overtime loss (which is still worth a point). You just can't do much more than that. And here's hoping they'll be able to carry that momentum right into the playoffs! Speaking of the playoffs, the Blades hadn't drawn up their playoff schedule as of our press deadlines. The logical kick-off date with Georgetown would be Friday at Ice Sports Oakville but an earlier start is possible so fans should keep close tabs.
