27 | Thursday, October 30, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OCTOBER 2014 New Oakville Hospital Features Expanded Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatric Service "One in five children in Ontario has a diagnosable mental health disorder and 70 per cent of adults with a mental health disorder noted that they experienced symptoms in their childhood," explained Dr. Alan Brown, Chief of Psychiatry at HHS. "These statistics underline a need to build capacity in our child and adolescent mental health programs." The New Oakville Hospital, opening December 2015, will feature an expanded Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatric Service so it can respond to this increasing demand and better serve these children and youth. The 10 bed unit at the current hospital will expand to a more spacious unit in the new Hospital, with the capacity to grow to 16 beds. It will provide additional facilities such as a gym as well as new program classrooms so the education of the youth staying on the unit can be maintained and physical fitness can be incorporated into their programming. The additional space will also allow the separation of children under 12 years of age from the adolescent group, so that they can be treated with peers with more similar needs.
