Musikay is putting a little `magic' in its seventh season Oakville's Musikay is hoping its seventh concert season is a magical one. "The number seven is associated with magic and things mystical. It is also known as the lucky number seven. All of these attributes perfectly describe Musikay's new concert season," stated a press release. "This year's programming includes the magic of the human voice with its infinite colours and variations. When it comes to the music of J.S. Bach, one can only think of his genius and his works as magical -- he can equally turn simple tunes and unbelievably complex melodies into musical gems with mystical qualities." This season of concerts for the music group, led by artistic director Stéphane Potvin, will also include music by seven historically-great composers. Mona Lisa-inspired Musikay's first concert, on Nov. 8, will be centred around the painting of the Mona Lisa, while the music will be from the renaissance period. On Dec. 20, the group presents its annual Messiah performance, which features music from Handel, as part of its wonderful Christmas tradition. Musikay's season closes with two Bach motets and the Kyrie from his B minor mass. Accompanying the music will be four voices and the Christian hymn of praise Te Deum, done by Bach contemporaries André Campra and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Musikay will also perform three motets by Canadian composer Allan Bevan. "We have some new, dedicated, and fantastic professional singers," stated the release. "We have a new format for our concerts which includes some visuals. We now offer a pre-concert `chat and tea' to share insights into the music presented. We also have a few surprises." As part of the upcoming season, Musikay will offer workshops this month and in December to help singers improve their learning and performing skills, as well as two sing-alongs taking place in November and April 2015. Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre to host Group of Seven-inspired exhibit until Nov. 30 The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre is putting on an exhibit centring on the art of the Group of Seven. The Group of Seven was a originally a group of Canadian landscape painters, including Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, and Frederick Varley -- artists A. J. Casson, Edwin Holgate and LeMoine FitzGerald were later become members. Although Tom Thompson died before the group formed, he is considered the inspiration for, and part of, the formation of The Group Of Seven. Connection Fibre Artists, the group holding the exhibit, "accepted the challenge to design and execute their own original art that reflects their individual research into the artists, the paintings and the styles of the Group of Seven," stated a press release. The group was formed in 1999 by friends who shared a love of stitching as an art form. "Their focus was to promote awareness and enjoyment of fibre art through gallery shows," stated the release. "They combine their experience with experimentation to continue to develop and widen the boundaries of fibre art, creating original surfaces and expressing their individual ideas and feelings in the process." Each member of Connections Fibre Artists has been inspired by either their own memories of the Canadian landscape, an emotional response to a particular Group of Seven artist/painting, or by some of the techniques and colour palettes used by the iconic Canadian artists. The Connections Fibreartists: Celebrate the Seven art show runs Friday (Oct. 31) to Sunday, Nov. 30. An opening tea party reception at the Joshua Creek centre, 1086 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E., will be held Sunday (Nov. 2) from 2-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.joshuacreekarts. com. For more arts news, visit oakvillebeaver.com.
