www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 31, 2014 | 12 Evening Targeting Cancer benefits IAH by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff POVERTY KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES For decades Oakville has been recognized as one of the most affluent towns in the nation. And while it strives to become "The Most Liveable Community in Canada", it may surprise you that more than 10% of the population lives below the poverty line and depends heavily upon social assistance and support. Over the past two decades, Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) at 485 Kerr Street, has played a significant role in serving many of the families, individuals and at-risk youth in Oakville by providing food and community support. In preparation for the long harsh winter, please consider making a tax deductible donation to KSM. Your ongoing, monthly support is critical as we serve our neighbours in need. Kindly fill out and forward. YOUR NEIGHBOUR Oakville resident Heather Spence is hosting the third annual Friends and Family Inspired Evening Targeting Cancer at Glen Abbey Golf Club Saturday, Nov. 8 to raise funds for Ian Anderson House (IAH) hospice. "With the success of the events from the last two years, raising more than $25,000, we're doing it again... We all admire and respect the care and solace Ian Anderson (House) gives us and it touches us all somehow," Spence said of why IAH was chosen as this year's cause. Since opening in November 1997, the local in-resident hospice has provided palliative care to approximately 1,800 residents from Halton and Peel regions. IAH needs to raise approximately $700,000 annually to maintain the care and support it provides to families free of charge, according to Monique Armstrong, IAH administrator. The pub night fundraiser, taking place at the 1333 Dorval Dr. golf course, began two years ago at The Stout Monk pub in north Oakville. Spence had expected to raise a few hundred dollars at a low-key event to begin a five-year initiative to build a room for children and youths dealing with cancer at the new Oakville hospital -- the packed house ended up raising more than $8,000. In just two years, the event raised $32,000 for YOUR NEIGHBOUR A group of friends and family is taking aim at cancer with a fundraiser whose proceeds will support Ian Anderson House.
