New rules for caregiver leaves announced by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 19 | Thursday, November 6, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Ontario government has introduced three new job-protected leaves for workers to take time off to care for a family member with a serious medical condition, or to cope the disappearance or crimerelated death of a child, Oakville MPP and Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn said on Friday. "We all know that time stands still when a family member has a serious medical condition," Flynn told those who gathered near the lobby of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. "During times like these caregivers should be able to focus on what's most important that's the health and comfort of their loved one in that time of need." Coming into effect on Oct. 29, the amendments to the Employment Standards Act apply to all workers in the province, whether full-time, part-time, permanent or contract. The job-protected leaves, include: eight weeks to care for a family member with a serious medical condition, 37 weeks to care for a critically ill child, up to 52 weeks for parents of a missing child and up to 104 weeks for parents of a child who has died as a result of a crime. Halton MPP and parliamentary assistant to the minister of health and long-term care Indira NaidooHarris was on hand for Friday's announcement and said ensuring job security allows caregivers to focus on their family.
