The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 22, 2003 - B3 K IA Winter driving made easier It's a routine endured every year as winter road conditions are on drivers' minds. Windshield washer fluid is filled, scraper and gloves placed into the back seat and the question of installing win ter tires or keeping the "all-sea son" versions creep back to the surface. The first winter storm usually brings w ith it a wave of accidents. Drivers struggle to maintain vehi cle control in conditions not seen in over eight months. Most of them panic. But with some prepa ration. winter driving is easily confronted and accidents less likely to happen. "Canadian winters can have severe w'eather conditions that make driving difficult," said Oenn Maidment, President of the Rubber Association of Canada. " All vehicle owners should check their tires before the winter weather sets in; ensuring the right type of tires, sufficient tread for winter conditions and proper tire pressure. This, along with contin ued checks, will make handling winter roads easier all season." Many drivers don't know' if their tires are ready for w'inter roads or changing weather condi tions; some simply don't have the facts about proper winter lire selection. To ensure your vehicle is best equipped to meet snow, sleet and ice, there are a few sim ple things to consider. If you plan to drive in severe winter conditions, you should install four w'inter tires. Look for tires marked with a pictograph of a mountain with a snowflake as they meet the new "severe snow tire" designation. If you don't anticipate harsh conditions but need to replace your tires, consult a tire dealer and decide what type of tire is best suited to your vehi cle. Four winter tires are recom mended, but if you plan on replacing only two tires, don't install them on the front axle of front wheel drive vehicles. Doing so can seriously compromise han dling ability. And. don't mix tires with different tread patterns, internal construction, and size because it degrades vehicle stabil ity. Leaving the same tires on all year is fine as long as they have sufficient tread - slippery winter roads require a high level of tire traction if the vehicle is to stop properly. A simple tread check includes a visual scan to make sure there are no embedded objects, cuts or abrasions in either the tread or sidewall area. Then, place a penny in the tire's groove with the Queen's crown facing down - if you can see the top of the crown, the tire needs to be replaced. Remember to let your vehicle be your guide, trust your senses. If a vehicle is difficult to stop even in light snow conditions and you feel its unsafe, then get your tires checked out by a reputable dealer. Another way to meet the chal lenge of winter conditions is w ith proper tire inflation. An easy and cheap way to maintain tires, prop er pressure also reduces tire fail ure and improves vehicle han dling. stopping distance, tread life and fuel economy. Internal tire pressure can change with air tem perature. one psi for every' five degrees Celsius, so regular checks are required all winter long. To get an accurate reading, tires should be checked when they are cold - that is when you haven't driven in a couple hours or if you've traveled less than a few kilometers. Be careful if you park your car in a heated garage; pressure readings might be mis leading if there is a significant difference in temperature between inside and outside. Improper pressure readings may compromise your safety unknow ingly. Drivers shouldn't dismay as the snow continues to fall. By checking tires monthly, winter driving will be easier and a lot safer! Here are some lips for a long (or short) winter's drive; Keep your gas tank full. If you are stuck in a drift, your engine may be your only source of heat. If stranded, run the engine about 10 minutes each hour to preserve fuel and prevent fumes from accumulating. Pack blankets, sleep ing bags, flashlights, extra batteries, extra clothes, first aid kit. food and water. _ J Bring warning signals and a brightly coloured cloth to hang on or near the vehicle as a flag to indicate your presence. You can't be rescued if you can't be seen. If you don't feel prepared for the weather ahead it is probably best to stay where you are and wait it out.
