www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 13, 2014 | 24 Volunteers are sought and operations are positioned to grow continued from p.22 public and private supporters subsidize distribution overheads. When purchasing produce, Moher said people have the option of selecting a $17 box, a $13 box or an $8 singles bag. "They pay that and then basically 11 days later they come back to their neighbourhood drop-site and pick up their produce. When they come to pick up for one month, they usually order it for the next month," said Moher. As a result of the OTF grant, FFB has increased its capacity to assist Halton residents by 60 per cent, now serving up to 1,400 households a month, Moher said. "That allows us to go from sending 800 boxes a month to about 1,400 boxes packed in a single month. It helps get the boxes further out into the community and make them more accessible," said Moher. She said the need is great for fresh produce, noting about 70 per cent of its boxes go to "high-need families." "They live on minimum wage, but they live in Oakville or in Burlington. The cost of living is so high, so there's a great need for that sector. There are also people who live on social assistance, who are also high need." "(KSM executive director) Gary O'Neill mentioned that he can actually use 400 food boxes alone at Kerr Street Ministries." Funds from the two-year grant are also being used to aid salaries for a volunteer coordinator, a program manager and a software developer. FFB will allocate another part of the money to new computer equipment and software to assist with operations at two new foodpacking sites Oakville's KSM and Milton's Bob Rumball Association for the Deaf. The new database system will improve ef ciencies. The program manager said the organization buys the "freshest and best" fruits and vegetables available with the money it receives. "It's not at the end of its life when we buy it for them. That is a big savings for them because they know for two weeks something will last in the fridge and they don't have to rush and eat it or throw it out in the end," said Moher. Halton Fresh Food Box is looking for new volunteers to box food in communities across Halton and can include more neighbourhoods in its food distribution. Those interested can contact FFB at 905-6348645 or foodbox@stchristophersburlington. com. For more information, visit www. haltonfreshfoodbox.com.
