November is adoption awareness month in Ontario November is Adoption Awareness Month and the Halton Children's Aid Society is joining the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies (OACAS) and its counterparts across the province in recognition of the importance of adoption. "All children and youths need and deserve a family to love and nurture them always," Mary Ballantyne, OACAS executive director, stated in a press release. "Every child and youth needs a forever family that provides support, unconditional love and a safe, loving home." When parents or caregivers are unable to provide a safe living environment for their children, Children's Aid provides them with the support needed so children can stay safely in their family home. If the safety of a child or youth cannot be ensured and they come into the permanent care of Children's Aid, a plan for their extended future starts immediately, stated the release. There are approximately 7,000 children and youths in the care of Children's Aid for whom adoption may be an option. Last year, 977 children and youths were connected to families through adoption, while approximately 2,300 children are in legal custody, or kinship or customary care. Of those adopted last year, 67 per cent were infants and children up to age five; 19 per cent were aged six to nine; nine per cent were 10-12 years old; and five per cent were aged 13 or older. Seventy-five per cent of children in Halton are available for adoption, with 60 per cent of them aged 13 and older. "While older children may have experienced challenges, they, too, need families to care for them and help them transition successfully into adulthood," stated the release "Every child is unique, but the one thing all children and youths have in common is the need for a family," said Ballantyne. Adoptive parents can include: individuals or couples, people unable to have children of their own, parents who want to add to their growing family and adults whose first choice for their family is adoption.
