Research enables Garth Webb students to know veterans by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, November 13, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Olivia Steele read the document that Lila Audrey Jones received 72 years earlier. They were just words on a page, but they couldn't help but drive home the realities of war. "It was the letter given to his wife," the Garth Webb high school student said. "It read, `Here are the funds you will receive for the next couple of years.' It was hard to grasp." Jones would be compensated for her husband's service to his country, but nothing could replace the loss of a husband and father. Arthur Jones, an Oakville soldier who called Bronte home, joined the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in June 1940. His daughter, Audrey Dianne Jones, was born a month before he went overseas. The soldier would not see his daughter again. He was captured during the raid on Dieppe in September 1942 and died a few weeks later, likely from injuries suffered while he was ghting to protect the freedom of his country and others. Steele, like each of the west Oakville high school's Grade 10 students, researched the life of a soldier killed in the Second World War. And this year, the students' projects are nding a new audience. Using the hashtag #GWSSRemembers, students posted soldiers' stories to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and documented their trying to bridge that gap through their research and create a memorial for these soldiers," said Duncan. "We want to continue these ideas in a way that is relevant to (students in) the 21st century." The school worked with Library and Archives Canada to obtain copies of the military service records of 192 soldiers. The les document each soldier's movements with their regiments, their medical history and information about their families. In some cases, it contains information such as their hobbies. Students used the les as a starting point and then did further research to discover more about their soldier. "I think there's more of a connection when you know more about them," said student Meghna Sarawat, who researched Antonio Rene Vermette. "It's not just his whole group. You have a personal connection with one soldier. I think that helps you remember more." For student Nick Brown, that connection came when he reached the end of a document. "It was weird seeing his signature," he said. "You start thinking, `He actually wrote that.'" Brown's soldier, Russell Downey, survived see Students on p.5 DEALS YOU LOVE A collage promotes Garth Webb Secondary School's history students' efforts to document the lives of soldiers on social media using the hashtag #GWSSRemembers. | submitted photo FOR LESS war experiences on blogs. With fewer veterans to tell their own stories and students not necessarily identifying with Remembrance Day traditions like the Last Post, Garth Webb history teacher Ian Duncan said it is important to nd a way to honour soldiers in a way with which a younger generation can identify.
