For the moment, though, they get to enjoy the feeling of having achieved one of the season's biggest goals -- bring ing the senior girls Halton championship to Aquinas for the very first time. And stopping an eight-year Georgetown run was tasty gravy, especially considering that Georgetown had beaten them last year in the Halton final. What's even more impressive is the fashion in which they did it. Facing a Georgetown team who had not lost a set, never mind a match in Halton this year, the Raiders dominated their opponents. A first set score of 26-24 is not indicative of the way the game went as Aquinas held big leads at various times but seemed to put it on cruise control while letting the Rebels back in the contest. They had led by scores of 20-14 and 23-17 before letting Georgetown come back to tie things at 24-24. Fortunately, the Raiders were able to finish off their opponents at that crucial moment 26-24. The second set saw true domination, however, as Meaghan Tilley started things off by serving eight straight points, seven of which the Rebels could not even return. At that point, the Raiders smelled blood and turned up their game. Grade 11 player Cheryl Silva was jumping through the ceiling, blocking everything Georgetown threw at her and. in turn, putting away some thunderous spikes and well placed tips. At the same time, Tilley was distributing the ball well to her other hitters, Danielle Walker, Marina Spudic, Carley Ponzo and Brittany Eybergen, who all managed to score at will. The Raiders held leads of 12-3 and 21-8 en route to their 25-15 victory. o o Vv w -X M A R C H BR EAK Y O U T H PROGRAM S! Additional Courses and Dates Available - Call for more information!
