The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 26, 2003 -A7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Student seeks financial assistance for youth leadership conference I am a 16-year-old student and have completed Grade 10 at Oakville Trafalgar High School. This year I am living in Denmark as part of the Rotary Club International Student Exchange Program. I have been nominated by my school guidance counsellor to represent Canada at the Global Youth Leadership Conference this summer in Washington DC and New York City. The Congressional Youth Leadership Council -- a non-profit, non-govemmental educational organization -- sponsors this event. This conference w ill provide an opportunity to meet outstanding schol ars and youth leaders from around the world who are making a difference, learn more about leadership and global issues, and meet some of the world lead ers who influence the daily lives of mil lions of people globally. The purpose of my letter is to seek financial support for the 12-day pro gram. which costs $3,500. Let me describe my experience that relates to this request. I am very involved in my school, church and community and I am com mitted to making a difference and changing the world. School involvement: · Represented my school at mock United Nations Assemblies (with the 'Southern Ontario Model Assembly') for two years: · Been on the honour roll each semester since starting Grade 9 in 2000: · Recipient of the Leader of the Pack Award in Grade 9; · Chosen by the school administra tion to be trained as one of eight peer mediators in the school through an organization called 'YouCA N !': · Secretary of the Wellness Council; · Organized a fundraiser for victims of 9/11 ; · Founder and past director of the Kids Can Free the Children (KC FTC) chapter at my school, organized fundraisers and education campaigns surrounding issues of child labour col lected thousands of cans of food each Halloween in a campaign called `Halloween For Hunger,' donating the food to Oakville's Fareshare Food Bank; · Co-organized a one-day conference for both my chapter and the regional Greater Toronto Area KCFTC chapter, called 'The World Affairs Conference'. In the community I am also dedicat ed to volunteering, especially with K C FTC which I joined in 1998. Since then I have taken on such roles Female PM would be refreshing, welcome change On. Feb. 13,1 attended an event sure to be part of the history books. W hy? If the results of that day's showing and enthusiasm were any indication of this upcoming election, we w ill be celebrating and welcoming Sheila Copps as the new Prime Minster of Canada. A thought which is very refreshing and a welcomed change. A business colleague. Heather Watson, and I attended this launch at a local Tim Hortons in Hamilton, located on Ottawa St. North. Media was well attended and supporters of all walks of life were there to cheer on Ms. Copps and her objec tives for the future of Canada. The best sign wit nessed today was one that stated " Sheila, She is one of Us." In my opinion, this is her slogan and winning grace for this campaign and election. Canada is comprised of many different cultures, people, levels of education and views, and from my observations today. Ms. Copps has the essence to take Canada forward to create a nation where all people can live together yet be proud of their her itage. More importantly. Ms. Copps realizes that processes need to change and policies will be mod ified to include the expertise of both men and women. As a believer in gender equality. I hope this campaign is not about the traditional 'bra-burning' celebration of women for the 21 st century. Rather, the understanding and admittance that countries are celebrating our leadership style of leading with the mind AN D heart. Countries are realizing that women are their next biggest assets, and it would be ideal for Canada to take a leadership role in defining this position for other countries to share and learn from. Canada, a nation of many voices, needs a leader who is like one of us, who has the drive, dedication and knowledge to make this a better place for our next generation, locally and globally.
